Do you have to upgrade with the same ram that the MBP ships with? The stock 2.16 has 1x 1gig, if you were to add another 1 gig would the type of ram used matter?

also, does adding ram yourself void the warranty?

yes. it is very important to use the ram that is specified for the computer. If you go to Crucial.com and follow the instructions on there to see what ram your computer needs.

Apple uses 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-5300 667mhz Ram modules. These are easy to find on 3rd party sites and much cheaper than Apple

Edit. Adding ram does not void warrenty, however, ALWAYS keep the stock Ram incase you get any issues that develop, otherwise Apple wont even look at your laptop if it develops a problem.

So, is it possible to use the supplied 1 gig and simply add one more, can you buy the same ram? Or would you have to buy 2 new 1X 1gig sticks?

You'd only need to buy 1 1GB stick. Just make sure it's the right specifications and the company selling it guarantees its use in Macs.

from the MBP technical specifications website:

1GB (single SO-DIMM) of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 memory on 2.16GHz configuration

therefore, you can buy another single SO-DIMM (1 stick) to complement the one that comes with the machine as long as it is the same type: PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2

i don't know what PC2-5300; mine was PC5300 (no 2)
