Hi guys, i have a 3gs running 3.0 , and i would like to upgrade and still be able to jailbreak. I've been doing research... i read somewhere its not possible to upgrade to earlier firmwares, because apple isnt signing them anymore.
So what are my options???? I had this phone for a while, so it may have the old bootrom i need to jailbreak from 3.1.3 but im not sure. ANy HELp ??

You'll definitely want to check the bootrom and make sure you have the old one.
That said, you should be able to blackra1n (to jailbreak at 3.0) and then use PwnageTool to shift+restore to a pwned 3.1.3 IPSW. I don't think you can upgrade to 3.1.2 anymore

If your phone is pwned, you can install a custom 3.1.2 firmware on your phone. Pwned phones do not do a signature check on custom firmwares. I would strongly recommend goign only to 3.1.2 custom, not 3.1.3.

Do you have a tethered or untethered JB?
Listen to what thelatinist said.
Skip the 3.1.3 and go to 3.1.2 instead.
Thats possible if you have the old iboot and not the new one with a tethered JB.

Its untethered with 6.4 bootrom
how do i find out if it is pwned ? i jb'd it last summer i dont remember what i used

Ok you're good then.
You can upgrade it to 3.1.2 to either official or custom firmware.
If your iphone is JB right now untethered it means it is pwned.

Thanks alot ... do i need a mac to do all of this ? im on a pc
i tried to custom restore it doing the shift click from itunes... no good(the signature) and i checked i have the shsh files in cydia.....
as you can probably tell i dont fully understand all of this.

You don't need a Mac, PC'll work just fine
Have you edited the host file to have it pull from Cydia's server? Read Saurik's Post in my sig for more details. "Bypassing the Overlord" section for instructions

Yeah i read that, and i dont know where to go from there ...

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

How do u add that ? to where ?

open with note pad and add ???

Open Notepad as an admin, that will allow you to change that file:)

Then open the file through Notepad, as it won't let you change it if you just open the file through Windows
