Upgrading to an iPhone 3G from an iPhone 2G, what now?

I decided to upgrade my iPhone 2G (unlocked on T-Mobile with the 3.0 software) to the iPhone 3G.

I found it on craigslist for $225. The iPhone 3G I am buying was originally purchased in December 2008, so the baseband will most likely be past 02.28.

When I first buy the phone:

1. Yellowsnow will not work, so what can I do with my phone until Ultrasnow is released?

2. When Ultrasnow is released, do I use Redsnow jailbreak my phone, and then use Ultrasnow downloaded from Cydia to unlock?

After I have unlocked it with Ultrasnow on 3.0:

3. I know that I have to disable 3G, but can I get GPS to work on the phone? I read something about adding T-zones for $5.99 will work, is this correct?

4. Will MMS work on the iPhone 3G after iPhone OS 3.01 comes out?

Answering these questions will help a lot, thanks.

Upgrade to 3.0, Jailbreak with Redsn0w, wait for Ultrasn0w and when it comes out download and install it from Cydia.

I'm not sure about your other two questions.
 
1 no yellowsnow doesnt work with 3.0 just wait a few more days for ultrasnow.
2 YES.
3. yes GPS will work with no probs. About Tzones my brother was trying to add it last week but they said its not available any more. They made him get a different 9.99 unlimited data plan.
4 once unocked with ultrasnow MMS will work with tmobile since they dont have any blocks like at&t. no need to wait for 3.01 or any updates from apple or at&T.

Wow thanks to the OP for posting this question. I have a unlocked and jailbroken 2G currently that has a dead part on the screen, unfortunately its where the send button is, and i cant dial 7, 8, or 9. But was thinking about upgrading to 3.0, so i can use the sideways texting feature, and it will relocate the send button.

But would much rather have a 3G, which I found for $200, 16GB, and has 3.0 installed. So from what everybody posted, jailbreak it with redsnow, then unlock with ultrasnow once its released?

Where can I download redsnow, the sticky is very confusing, and since this thread is already here, no need for me to open another one. Hope OP doesnt mind, since we both have the same ?'s and both are on TMOBILE.

Edit: Also does it matter which baseband i am on to jailbreak it?

Download Redsnow by going to http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ and pick Mac/PC from the Official Bittorent Release. If you prefer to not use a torrent, pick a link from an unofficial mirror.

With Yellowsnow it mattered which baseband you had, but it doesn't now with Redsnow and Ultrasnow.

I thought that a lot of people had this question, so I don't mind.
 
Well, now you don't have to worry about it. Ultrasn0w is out, so just a go ahead and jailbreak and start dialing!
 
Question...this is off topic but...if you had a 2g iPhone your contract with ATT would be up by now or very soon...why wouldnt you just get a new 3G or 3GS from apple for less than you paid for one off craigslist? :confused:
