I just got a 3gs a couple of months ago. And if a new iPhone does release in the next few months, being with a phone company for 3 years, is the only way for me to get my hands on the HD is to buy only the phone itself? Or are there any discounts or they trades or whatever technical terms y'all use?

you could see your 3gs on ebay and then get the new one on either ebay or craiglist or buy it full price from apple. or add a line on your account to get the discount.

Last summer I sold my old 16gb iPhone 3g on eBay for $375, and that was a few weeks after the release of the 3GS. I probably could have got more if I had sold it before. I was also able to convince AT&T to put a credit of $200 on my account on launch day of the 3GS since I've been with them awhile and complained about paying the $500. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, but I wasn't rude or anything and they were quite accommodating. Figure I might as well try and it paid off, an extra $200. So I ended up with a brand new 3GS and a $75 profit to spend on apps and an inCase Slider. It was a pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

This year I plan on selling mine a week or so before the launch of the new iPhone (kinda doubt they'll use HD in the name because of the Zune HD, but who knows). I still have my first gen iPhone that my wife uses as essentially an iPod Touch. That is a collector's item. I'll get by on that for a week and then get the new hotness. Unless it turns out that it isn't worth the upgrade. We'll see. Apple has to do something to keep ahead of the growing pile of Android devices. 960x640 screen will go a long ways towards that. Doubt I'll need a front facing camera, but ask me in two years and maybe I'll use it all the time.

If you've only just got a 3GS you will have to either buy a new iPhone or buy your contract out.. if you we're so sure about the release of the new iPhone... why didn't you just wait!

Yeah, like acfusion29 mentioned, Apple's put out a new iPhone every summer for the last three years.

AT&T will typically let people do "early upgrades", but they usually only give early upgraders a $200 discount off of the phone's full-price. People who wait (and don't do an early upgrade) usually get a $400 discount off of the phone's full price.

For the iPhone 3GS, full-price = $599 for 16GB, $699 for 32GB.

If a new iPhone comes out this summer and keeps the same "full-price", you'd probably be able to upgrade for $399 for 16GB, $499 for 32GB.

Like others have said, you can then sell your iPhone 3GS. That money would help offset the cost a bit.

Your bill must be over $100+ per month before taxes then.
1 year subsidized upgrades for iPhone users with on-time accounts with a monthly expense greater than $100, or (ii) 18 month subsidized upgrades for iPhone users with on-time accounts with a monthly expense less than $100.
More details can be found by calling AT&T about your specific account.

I pay about 155 before taxes for two lines. My wife's line is 9.99 plus 30 for data. I am late paying my bill every single month by about a week due to when I get paid. Apparently I found out this month that back in Feb I was cut off due to non payment. They charged me a fee for reconnection, but credited me for it. But yeah, Aug, a bum like me can upgrade. Take that chit :apple:....

On a side note, is it possible to have an Iphone and pay more than 100? I have the cheapest family plan for 59.99......

Wow :D
Its funny how AT&T device upgrades work. Sometime the system will show you non-eligible when you are and other times the other way.
Your only safe bet is to call or check your status online logged in to your AT&T account.
Theres many plans that with Text and unlimited data would be easilly over $100 a month. The unlimited talk per phone for example is $99.99 without anything.

Call and have your billing cycle date changed so the due date falls when you get paid.

Unlimited everything for an iPhone on an individual line would be $120 per month.

Nope, changed in Jan. 69.99 for an individual line. Family unlimited is 69.99 for the first line and 49.99 for each additional.

Is your account a single line or Family Plan?

Yeah I checked online logged in and I called customer service after to verify...It's legit. :p The customer service agent admitted that it is quite rare for someone to be able to upgrade with full discount after a year.. I bet in my shoes. :D

Not total bill. A specific line has to itself pay more than $100 a month for there to be any earlier upgrade.
