upgrading to iLife

hi all, ive just read that iLife '06 takes up a whopping 10GB of space on disk.....i just wondering, does the previous iLife get deleted or written over somehow? 10GB of my already half full HD is a lot to use up for this installation. eek!

any experience upgrading to ilife 05 from 04?

hi i recently switched to the mac, i found out today that iLife '06 came out is there a way i can get it cheaper , i have had my mac for 3 weeks??
 
I should overwrite it. However if you're a bit short on space you could do a custom install and just install the apps you want. For example I don't use iDVD or iMovie so I just didn't install them and that saved me almost 5GB.
 
im not sure im going to be using iWeb....i dont have and am not going to get, a .mac account anytime soon. i want the new iphoto, imovie and garageband though, and iDVD. i'm alo getting iWork 06 .

so you need to have a .mac account to use iWeb? damn i want iLife bad too. :(
 
You can limit the disk space by doing a custom install and only selecting which components you want. If you actually use iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb, then I guess you're out of luck! ;)
 
hehe, i use all except garageband most of the time........ah well, who says i cant spring clean my Hard Drive?:D just ordered iLife, iWork, and the iPod FM radio remote.
 
Garageband is pretty hefty when you consider all the bundled loops etc. I can't imagine iDVD will be all that much larger and iWeb doesn't look very hefty so hard drive space-wise you should be fine IMO.
 
im gradually making room...so far ive found 6GB worth of redundant (as in not accessed for over a year) files from school, work, old pics.....i am archiving these to my maxtor HD as we speak.
 
So I can leave iLife '05 installed untouched and install iLife '06 over it? I assume that will leave all the preferences intact and my libraries and albums will be recognized in iPhoto. Is this correct?

Should iLife '05 have been a free upgrade to '04 users?

I could possibly see a free upgrade if there were no new applications, but '06 introduces iWeb.

The fairest thing would be an upgrade version for '05 users -- maybe $49.

Based on what? You pay for upgrades of every other piece of software. Developers need paying.

I disagree. Looking at some of the new features, particularly in iMovie where those themes in the Keynote look amazing, I think it's only fair that Apple be compensated for the efforts they've put into creating them.

I can see that you might argue a reduced price for those who have iLife 05 against those with earlier versions. But since many people are happy to skip every other iLife (or every other OS) and since iLife 05 still works pretty well, you don't have to upgrade unless you particularly want the new features; it's not like a subscription ran out.

Sure, it sucks a little more if you ended up buying iLife 05 in November. Buy it early, use it for a full 12 months and you might not mind quite so much when iLife 07 comes out next Jan.

I bought a new mac and iLife '05 shipped like 2 or 3 weeks later last year. Apple has some sort of upgrade program where new mac owners within a 14 or 30-day window (can't remember the exact time frame) can upgrade for $20. You may have just missed the cut-off point but it is worth a call to apple.
