Upgrading to M1, what is the best use of old Macs and iPads?

I am upgrading to the M1 12.9 iPP this year and buying an M1/MX Mac Mini in 2022. Most of use is normal (internet browsing, streaming apps, and working on office-style applications), but over the next year, I‘m spending more time on video tutorials and digitizing documents, books, family memorabilia and CDs.

I appreciate any suggestions on ways to repurpose the devices or recommendations of any organizations that might benefit from receiving older devices. FYI, the MBP monitor does not work (flexgate), but the machine is operable when connected to an external monitor—I own Dell U3818DW and a 15.6 portable monitor.

For possible iPad donations, Apple used to have an iPad donation program in connection with Teach for America, but it looks like that's no longer the case. In your community you could look for a donation program to help senior citizens stay connected to their families using iPads. These programs often provide set up and tech help too. Or ask your local library if they accept donations to help people read the library system's ebooks.

I donated my last couple of beyond their prime but working Macs and iPads to Emmaus. I think it’s an international charity, and supports the homeless and poor. They will either sell the donated products to raise funds or pass them onto those in need who can use them. If it can help someone else in need, then it does also help the conscience a bit about buying a newer replacement.

iPad: There's any number of organizations in your local community. Churches, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA, &c. Just remove your Apple ID. Make sure it's gone from your Apple account. Then factory reset it. Otherwise it's useless to them.

MBP: Charities don't want broken tech. They don't have repair techs sitting around to repair them or part it out. Sell it for parts only on eBay or give it to Apple for recycling.

Agree with this.

Also keeping your MBP as it would make a decent backup for your digitizing project
