Upgrading to new 6S+ from 6+ without losing photos

In past, for whatever reason, when I've upgraded my phones (have gotten all phones since 4, and have alternated between fresh and backup upgrades to the new one) I seem to lose (or make unavailable) my photos on my iMac (2014 27" 5K Retina) (they show in the application with dashed outlines, but are not viewable--I have found them in my Time Machine backup, and have re-imported a few).

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but, I would like to do a fresh update (with the stuff from iCloud synching), download only the Apps I want, but to have all my photos still available at least on my iMac. What do I need to do?

iCloud Photo Library is essentially the only sure thing, IMHO. Other than that, make sure to back up your 6+ immediately before activating your 6s+

Thanks for the responses, does the screen shot attached show the right settings for OS X, and I assume I need all my Macs and iOS devices to be set the same?

iCloud photo library only keeps your photos on iCloud as long as you pay for the storage or have enough iCloud space for your pictures. if you pay 99 cents or 3.99 a month then go ahead and turn it on. 99 cents a month buys you 50 gigs


iCloud photo sttream only keeps the recent 1000 pictures and older pictures are erased

you should be backing up your phone to iTunes and using photos / iPhotos to keep your pictures.

when backing up and restoring to a new iPhone , turn on backup encryption , so the iPhones secure keychain ( where it stores web passwords and wifi passwords ) and health data are restored to the new phone.

iCloud keychain does not "store" wifi passwords on iOS devices, it only pushes them

Thanks, Rigormortis. I have the 50 GB (and have 46 GB free), so have enough room. Your comment on photo stream--does that mean I should NOT check it in my settings as shown above?

Attached are the settings from my iMac and iPhone (have an iPad (same settings as iPhone) and a MacBook (not using iTunes to sync, so, SOME settings same as iMac)).

From what I understand from the replies, should I turn on iCloud Photo Library on the iPhone and iPad (get a warning saying that all my photos will be deleted (from iTunes, I guess??!!??)--but I guess I will be getting them all in the cloud, now? And, I should turn off Photo Stream on all devices?

This all seems kinda confusing, so, hope someone has figured it out!

This is starting to drive me crazy. I had changed both OS X and iOS settings as shown above, so I thought all my photos are in iCloud (?). So today, in advance of getting my new phone, I am doing an iTunes backup, and when I plugged my phone into my iMac, Photos opened to import one picture, and iTunes synced by moving over 1,000 pictures down to my phone. Do I now have to change some setting in iTunes or for synching? Don't the applications and settings talk to each other, so if I set all my devices and computers to use iCloud, they'd all use iCloud?

Grrrrrr....
