I'm currently using MBP 13'' 2015 MF840 (i5 2.7GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SDD) at work. I am changing jobs right now (I am a fullstack developer - Ruby / JavaScript), and I need to give up this laptop to the company which provided it to me.

I was looking for a replacement, and found that local stores in my country are selling brand new MBP 15'' 2015 MJLQ2 (i7 2.2GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB SDD, Intel Iris Pro), non-refurbished for as low as $1750-1840. I'll get 1 year warranty with Apple, since items are non-activated. How long do you think this notebook will last?

Should I go for it?

Take a look at this post love my 2015/15" but considering the performance improvements that the 2018 has over the 2015 I would consider the newer ones.

o_O as low as $1700 for a three year old laptop? Why would you ever do that? You can buy a top of the line brand new 15" windows laptop for that money. And if you don't want windows, you can still get a brand new 13" MBP with or without touchbar. Both are superior options and the 13" MBP will actually be more powerful than the model you are looking at.

Debatable. It's got a worse keyboard and a lesser screen resolution -- both pretty important factors for programming use. Also half the RAM.

A model being from several years ago is not as damning as it once might have been. Intel's stagnation has changed the game.

Well technically it's lower than what this base model was sold at Apple Store ($1999 + tax).

I used 13" MBP without touchbar at work and didn't like it, it was running hotter than my 13" MBP 2015. I want some cool and quiet machine. Also, don't need a touchbar and I need function keys (using Atom and RubyMine which rely on Fn keys shortcuts).

Basically I was looking at this as kind of upgrade from my current model. Since I get +8GB RAM, more screen real estate and faster processor (quad core vs dual core on 13" MBP 2015). Still I can keep the ports, good keyboard with function keys which I use a lot. The storage is the same (didn't need much of it, or I can upgrade it later with OWC SSD kits for 2015 models).

I also was offered the option of brand new 15" MBP 2015 i7 2.8GHz / 16GB RAM / 1TB SSD / Intel Iris Pro. Which is the high-end model of the one which was discontinued in July. It'd cost me $2780 with AppleCare until May 2019. Does this processor runs hotter than on the base model? (2.2GHz vs 2.8GHz). Technically this high-end model is cheaper than base model of 2018 15" MBP (2.6GHz / 16GB RAM / 512GB SDD) and has more storage.

newer processors are upwards to 80% faster on multicore than 2015 generation. Go look up the results to see if it's worth it to you.

If you're dead set on a 2015 model couldn't you offer to buy your existing laptop from your current employer?

I can't see spending any where near 2,000 dollars on a laptop that is using three year old technology.

If you prefer the 2015 design (as I do), and can get one for what you believe to be a good price, I see nothing wrong with doing so.

The 2016/17/18 MBPros have come with a host of problems.
