Upgrading to Panther

I want to upgrade from 10.1.5 to Panther... can I do this directly or do I have to go from 10.1.5 to 10.2 and then upgrade to 10.3?

You can go straight to 10.3. There shouldn't be any problems.

I assume it's possible but I personally wouldn't want to do that. They're quite different beasts (puns suck) so I'd recommend doing an archive and install instead whereby your settings are still saved but you get a fresh install of the system.

I never install a new OS 'over the top' as it were.
I always backup and completely wipe the HD and then install the new OS.

I'd recommend just going straight to 10.4 if I were you though.

How well would 10.4 run on my computer? I have an iBook G3, 700MHz, 640Mb RAM, 20Gb.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never actually upgraded an OS before so I'm not exactly sure how one would backup everything before doing a clean install and then get it all back on afterwards... could someone give me a hand? Thanks

Mmmm, I think the 10.4 question would depend on how full your HD is. With only 20GB, you could quickly slip into the low-free-space kinds of issues other people have been seeing. But otherwise, speed-wise, both should, in general, be faster than 10.1.x on your computer. For the love of god, please get off of 10.1, though!

I would disagree. People who post to this board who wipe and install clean have had fewer errors in my "unscientific" observation. I'm one of them.

Especially since the OP is moving from 10.1

I also disagree. Although it may not necessarily be necessary (I good at English), it pretty much ensures a clean system. An upgrade cannot guaranty this. You can't deny that there have been quite a few members around here who've had to go back and do clean install to get rid of a few (usually minor) gremlins. I found the clean install of Tiger on my iBook much better than the upgrade. Problems included apps that wouldn't open and a broken Safari.

Stick with panther, tiger is a real big memory hog. There isn't much of a difference between the OS's (widgets are nice, I use them once in a while ,but not that big of a deal in my opinion).
