Ok, looking at upgrading to Snow Leopard from Leopard as apparently SL has better RAID stability using Disk Utility than in previous OS X versions.

Just want to check with the community here if there are any known issues before I upgrade systems

I have:

Mac Pro 3,1 (2008, 2.8 x 8 core)
16 GB RAM
1x ATI 3870
1x ATI 4870
Vertex 250 SSD
1x WD 320 HDD
2x 3TB Hitachi Deskstar's

Also any issues or support with the OCZ Vertex SSD and TRIM? - Do I need to wipe the Vertex to install fresh copy of SL for TRIM support (if available) to be enabled?

Hi
I have the same Mac Pro as you do. Just to chime in. I never upgraded from Leopard to SL as I use it to run FCP7 and my machine were very stable. In the post house I used to have my Mac, they had 2 other Mac Pro, one the same as mine and one newer.
After they upgraded to SL they were never as stable as mine. We spent 5 months editing together and I had by far the least crashes.

We all had the same RAID card and RAID connected (can´t remember the model right now) so I´m not sure the controller is any better. Do you use software RAID btw? I never tried that.

I run Leopard on a 320 Seagate and have
750 Seagate Barracuda
2T WD Caviar Black
I swapped my original graphic card for a 5770 yesterday

I recently swapped a 1T for another 320 Seagte to put Lion on it. Why don´t you try to install SL on a separate disk first, so you can check out if it´s stable?

I will still leave my Leopard disk for when I run FCP7. I will use Lion when I´m using FCPX, at least for now

I have the same concerns about stability. Leopard is very stable.

Yes I'm planning on using software RAID.

The only reason I'm looking at updating to SL is b/c apparently RAID on Disk Utility on any Mac OS prior to SL is said to be 'flaky'.

I have my system backed up on a separate external. I'll give it a try and update onto the main internal drive and see how it goes. I can always go back. But just wasn't sure how SL will affect the Vertex and drivers and TRIM support (if any) on this upgrade

Lion is too new. Needs bugs ironing out? LOL. I want to see how it pans out. I'm conservative when it comes to systems!

I know how you feel. In my house I run Lion, SL, Leopard and Tiger on different machines. I tried Lion out on my wifes Macbook first. It became very unresponsive, but she won´t let me do a clean install. She just complains how I ruined her Mac

For srsly?

Snow Leopard has been rock solid for quite a while.

Not so much with Lion though.

No TRIM support though, not without third party tools. Apple is not supporting TRIM on any third party drive.

Ok, I'll give it a go and update my System. Fingers (and toes) crossed :D

I have a machine for home use, so I am definitely not a power user by any stretch (lots of aperture, imovie clips, mail, browsing, itunes, etc.). I was running 10.5.8 on a 3,1 Mac Pro with the 8800GT, 10 GB RAM and 3 hard drives. I upgraded to SL a few months ago. I was apprehensive about doing this since I don't trust upgrades, but I started noticing programs and utilities that were SL only and I figured that after being out for a year it should be pretty stable. I hemmed and hawed over whether to do a fresh install to get the cobwebs out of my system, but in the end I just did an upgrade install.

I am happy to say that I haven't had any more issues running SL than I did with Leopard. I also upgraded a couple of MBPs that seem fine as well.

I can't believe what i just did.
Sold my 1.1 Mac Pro, pulled all my drives.
Bought a used 3.1 Mac Pro for $100 more then I sold for, upped the ram ($300 2X4) grr.
Put in my drives, pressed the button
The SSD drive for OS was booted up in about 30 seconds.
Boom all my stuff the way it was on my other system
Logic and a few of my plugs needed to run the authorizer as my system ID changed.
Running Lion here just fine, SL was solid for me (on the 1.1)

Done!

update: I did a SL UPDATE 10.6.8 (not clean install, could not be arsed). apart from several initial freezes when it went to sleep would not wake up. so far, a week since and all seems to be good. hoping it stays that way
