I do a mix of photography and videography, since there is no newer Mac Pro on the horizon, is there any other way to upgrade my system?

I'm on the
12 core 2.5ghz e5-2696 v2
D500
32gb
1tb SSD

Worth my while to look into the e5-2690 v2 or the e5-2697v2?

Hello,

For photography, if you use lightroom or photoshop, most effects actions are single threaded ... an iMac 5K with a 4790K cpu will destroy your 12 core Mac Pro.

So I would personally suggest not upgrading for photography.

I don't edit video, but going from a e5-2696 v2 to a e5-2697v2 sounds expensive for a "small" performance upgrade.

In many use cases, you might get better performance by installing one of the six-core 3.5-3.7 Ghz processors.

U need 12 core? How about 6 core?

Can I ask, is your current system not meeting your needs? Or is it that you just have an itch for an upgrade?

Also are you doing 4K video? Which do you More, photos or video?

That 6 core was the one I started with, I bought the mac pro a few years ago when I managed to score a big job. We had to shoot and deliver 2 episodes of a lecture every week for 12 weeks. If you search through my old thread, you will see my comparison review. The 6 nMP is about the same speed as the 8 core 3.33 2010Mac Pro. I was sorely disappointed when I realised there was no performance improvement so bought the 12 core chip and voided the warranty to upgrade it. At least the 12 core helped cut down rendering time by a lot. But as of today after some test/experiment if I ditch Apple Compressor for say HandBreak for final compression (before delivery), I can cut down processing time by many folds... I think it takes only 20% to 25% the time I needed on compressor.

Keep the Mac as it is for the photography work, but if the video work is killing a 12-core CPU (i.e. all 12 cores fully utilised) then you might need to move to another platform (PC) for that workload to get the extra cores and newer CPU's. Have a look at the HP Z840

Probably not doing 4k video for the moment. Work is almost 50% 50%.
And yes, just itching for an upgrade, a slight incentive to face the computer the every day.

IF there is anything that I want, an improvement in responsiveness would be nice.

Lol I'm the same and have been eyeing off the 2.7 12c.

If had responsiveness issues also with the 6C, I doubt it's the hardware , I suspect it's OS X

Is your 2696V2 upgrade still working fine. I am doing that upgrade too. Overall do you recommend this upgrade.

I was under the impression that it doesn't affect the apple warranty.

Did you ever got display or other issue. I am starting to have slight display issue (it looses connection on one monitor sometimes but re-plugging into another thunderbolt port seems to fix it). I feel that this will get worse and i will have to use warranty.

Thanks for posting these, they make for very engaging reads. Highly recommended for fellow photographers and videographers!
