I plan to purchase more iCloud storage purely so that I can upload the photos on my iPhone 7 to the cloud. I will then be resetting my iPhone 7 and trading it in for the iPhone 12 when its released. I will then want the photos back on my new iPhone 12 and will cancel the extra iCloud storage.

So when I come to reset my iPhone 7, effectively deleting all content, how will I know that my photos are definitely safe in the cloud?

You can check by logging into icloud.com to see all of your photos as well as Mail, Contacts, Notes, Reminders (and the other apps shown) if you have iCloud enabled for them too.

Thanks, that makes sense. I'll need to reset my phone to trade it in. iCloud would be a simple way, rather than searching all my external hard drives to find the backups.
