I actually avoid using my MBP to upload my pics because they get reduced in size once iPhoto gets them. Is there any way around using iPhoto to upload? It's very important the the photos stay in its original size. Any help appreciated.

Nope - it will mount to the desktop and you can put them wherever you like - what will you be using to edit the images if you are not using iPhoto?
What size are you taking pictures in? I've never heard of iPhoto changing the size of the pictures upon import. Yes, it sizes them down to fit them in the window, but it's the same file size and same resolution.
