UPS for Mac's

Hi guys

I want to put a UPS in my server room as a recent power cut fried some of our Mac mini servers.

My question is a bit of a stupid one, how do you connect Mac minis and mac pro's to a UPS device.
I haven't ever dealt with UPS devices before so i am pretty green.

Any help would be much appreciated

Some UPS devices have a USB port.

I have several APC SUA Models but they do not have a USB connector. When I loose power I shut down manually.

Mac Pro's should connect in the same way as Dell/HP Rack Server does as has a standard style connector for the Power Lead into the PSU.
Some PSU's then use USB so can pass information through into the Servers to say to Power Down etc. Others will mean that you will need to start to power down

mini's don't have a standard style connector so may need to get special cables to plug into the PSU from the PSU.

Alternatively could get a Batter Backed UPS put inline for the Power Feeds into the Server Room so basically the UPS sits outside the Server racks and does the whole Server Room rather then individual machines/racks etc. This allows to use normal PDU within the Server Room as the PDU's themselves have the UPS upstream.

What works best depends upon what need to protect.

If you have a more modern rack in your server room then look for a UPS that fit into the bottom of that rack. It will make more sense in a rack situation.

Assuming your server room has an emergency generator that kicks in during an outage then you may not need to connect your Macs to the UPS for signaling at all. A simple APC 2200VA rack mount is affordable and could keep many servers up and running for several minutes (plenty of time to bridge the startup of you building's backup generator).
