UPS??? What happened to FedEx?

I haven't seen anywhere on MR or news why Apple has gone with UPS. I understand they probably got a better deal or whatever, but would be nice to know what prompted Apple to initially state FedEx, then with no warning, UPS tracking numbers start coming out.

I checked the Apple Store, and it no longer states shipping via FedEx either.

Just an interesting thought, and wondering if anyone can shed light on it....(intelligently of course).
 
Um, this isn't exactly news at this point.

I assume UPS either undercut FedEx's bid, or it's some sort of corporate maneuvering we mortals will never be privy to. Either way I don't think there's a lot of speculation to be had.

I know it isn't new news, but in all the excitement of tracking numbers, nobody has stating why the change in carriers. Just curious that's all. One can look at only so many screenshot's of folks' tracking statuses. lol..
 
Because UPS offered them the best price for full delivery on Saturday business.

I expect it was super cheap, because I think Apple traditionally uses fedex mostly, and UPS is probably trying to get some or all of that business.
 
Apple has been using UPS for a while now.

UPS sometimes has cheaper prices for international express shipments. And they may have bid, but they may also just have offered a better solution internationally than Fedex. Realize Apple does use FedEx for domestic shipments and accessory shipments along with UPS.

My personal experience is that I have never had a mis-delivery by FedEx. OTOH, I have had more UPS mis-deliveries than I can count.

Apple is offering free delivery of iPads. As others, have correctly explained, UPS is virtually always cheaper than any other private delivery service. Going with it, Apple will save a butt-load of money.
 
Hey, maybe they'll deliver it a day early like they did with Leopard..



Or knowing UPS, it'll be there by May 1st. Tentative, of course.
 
FedEx has frequently sent computers and iPods to a block-away neighbor, and I have had to call in all cases to fix it. I often watch as the truck drives by, only to have him sheepishly return to my house.

Same house number, but a different street. :mad:

Here's hoping UPS can do it better! :cool:
 
Me, I'm a bit worried. The FedEx guys knows me and never misses a delivery. One of them even called me when I wasn't home, told me where he would be and I met up with him!

UPS, however, has caused me a few headaches.

But I don not plan on going ANYWHERE on Saturday until it arrives, so all should be good.

Its called churn companies are always changing shipping vendors, in this case UPS and FEDEX offer essentially the same product both companies run in the high nineties on % of successful deliveries.

As far as damaged packages both companies use powered belts and gravity chutes for sorting resulting in some damages.

Since this is a Saturday release UPS probably delivers to more locations than FEDEX and might better serve the ipad release.
 
OMG, it's not some Machiavellian corporate maneuvering. UPS has a much stronger ground network than Fedex. They have much broader coverage for Saturday residential delivery and they are very competitive on price. It's as simple as that.
 
Lots of Apple Store orders seem to go FedEx, so that's probably why it said so.

Since the 3GS Apple has been shipping big launches directly from China and uses UPS. They probably simply have the capacity to move so many boxes directly from China through customs, and then hold them for specified delivery day.
 
Fedex missed a delivery to Steve Jobs house, he through a tantrum and made someone switch the companies. It's not the first time high level management have changed something in the business because of a personal grudge :p
 
I know from experience is that it is very difficult to get FedEx to hold anything for delivery on a particular date.
