Upscaling to 1080p via software encoder?

Hello,

i just want to know if there is a software that does a good job on upscaling content to e.g. 1080p during en-/transcoding (maybe from DVD to .mp4/.mkv) . The reason why i ask is that many TV's have a crappy upscaler, so the film which is in let's say 576p/720p will not look to good on a LCD panel that has a native resolution of 1080p.

I wonder if a DVD that has been upscaled properly to 1080p during encoding to .mp4/.mkv would look much better than the "original" content upscaled by a cheap DVD/LCD TV.

So is there such a software and how does it work for you?

Upscaling

Isn't upscaling using software from 480p to 1080p going to be terrible.

Even most hardware upscalers, don't go to 1080 full.

I'm not sure what the results would be like in software, but I can certainly give it a go using some software I use.

Hmm, if you have a LCD whith 1920x1080 pixels natively and the DVD Player or LCD would only scale your DVD to 720p you would see a black border all around the picture/film because it would only fill 1280 × 720 pixels (assuming it's put in the middel of the screen).

If you want to have full screen picture the content has to be stretched further anyway - and that is where i think a good software solution (that does not necessarily do the upscaling in realtime during encoding) could be much better than the 50 cent chip that the LCD/DVD player manufacturer has put in the device and which has to do upscaling in realtime.

Another solution could be an external scaler for 3000€...

May i ask you what software you will use for testing?
