So I'm sitting there, on the royal throne as we typically surf the web.

I don't know if this has been discussed, or not, since I don't frequent the forums. I've been a Mac guy since back when the 56k was out.

SO, this is what I've concluded.

Subscription based model. It's so infuriating, that I bought the M1 Mac Studio Ultra, that I maxed out for about $7k, add the XDR monitor on top of that (don't forget a stand, folks! Oh and a webcam if you use one), and boom, it's like a car, as soon as I got it, the new ones were being in the works. If I didn't have the 8tb, I might consider it for the mini, but I just don't have the need for it right now.

MY GUESS, is just like Adobe, the iPhone, amongst other products, is they are going to go to a subscription based model. That's why we can't upgrade anything on our machines. We will eventually be forced to upgrade to the latest and greatest (or at least have that option). They are HUGE on recycling. Just send in your old or current Mac, and boom, they can reuse the components. Plus for actual power users, Apple is guaranteed to always have revenue coming in. I have a drawer full of iWatches that are just obsolete now. Shoot, even iPhones.

We complain every year about how iPhones increase in price etc, yet we still buy one. Studies (actual research) has shown not having an iPhone etc, you automatically basically looked down upon, even at the CEO level. College students aren't as cool, or even as trustworthy.

This is my opinion, I have no research about this other than I hope I don't need more TP. If it hasn't been thought of or discussed before, you heard it here folks.

Coming from the PC world, I have a different take on all of this. I always assembled my own machines. When you do this, you realize there is no use in getting the latest, most powerful, lollapalooza stuff. I always went for value for my money. So, I used a motherboard that was from the last couple of years, hotcamuchacas. It was always a good idea to get an AMD CPU a couple of years behind to avoid the problems some of them had, like the Crappola 9590, That hot running turd used 220 Watts!!! My Mac Studio is currently using about 13 watts. My MS is an M1 Max. I was more interested in the available Unified memory than the ultimate power of the processor. You learn when you build that good enough is all you need. I miss the great GPUs and the audio my gaming PC had, but finally, I could no longer stand Windows. My feet were halfway into the Apple ecosystem anyway, so with the death of my last assembled PC, I decided to make the break. I got a Mac Studio M1 Max with 30GB of unified memory and a 1 TB internal drive. I have always regularly updated my iPhones. I am on my 7th, and I finally purchased an iPad Pro M4 13", and I love it. I learned with the PC that other than upgrading the GPU, I never did anything more. So, not being able to upgrade the MS did not deter me at all. The sound it has completely sucked, but I took care of that with an external DAC/Amp. I do not anticipate upgrading My Mac Studio for many years.

I totally get you! My PC friends tell me about their PC Cards and speed and how fast it is. They don't say how it's the size of a small car lol. But there will always be bigger and better. I ended up selling my 32" XDR monitor for I think $3k to get two 27" studio monitors. But I'm still running my M1. I'm A designer and it's still all I need. I think it's just slow because I have "Don't close my web tabs syndrome" lol.

I guess really this is a fool proof way for power users to always have to upgrade down the road. I'm unsure if you use an iPhone, but mine sure does slow down with every update! My Mini 13 is my baby! And she's gaining weight and slowing down!

I was tempted to get the new M4 mini desktop, but in the end I just can't justify the cost of losing an 8tb laptop which I have as well, since I don't always have wifi.

I'm just not used to Apple cranking out new processors so quickly! And if this reply doesn't make much sense, I apologize, just waking up from a nap...

But Apple, at least include a stand for your monitor lol. Or at least some books to set it on.
