Hello everyone, I'm new to this so please bear with me

I bought my iphone from a store in Hong Kong and it was unlocked, had cydia jailbreak and stuff.

I just updated my Iphone through Itunes to version 2.2.1 i believe and now when i turn on my phone i can only "slide for emergency"

and when i plug my phone to my computer, Itunes says that

"The Sim Card inserted in this Iphone does not appear to be supported"

is my iphone dead?

Additional information: the card i am using right now is actually a card for an Iphone in Hong Kong because i previously subscribed for one. However due to some unfortunate reasons that phone died

Any help appreciated

So the card is the proper one that is intended for the iPhone?

2.2.1 updated the baseband and as a result any unofficial unlocks (ones not authorised by the carrier/Apple) were removed if you did the update. It seems odd that it happened to you if you were using a SIM intended for the iPhone...if I were you I'd try and get in touch with your carrier.

is it possibly because this card has already activated my previous phone?

are there any solutions to solve my problem or is my iphone gone for good

Its not the phone. If it's displaying "Slide for emergency" then it's next to certain that it's something to do with the SIM card. "Bricked" means that it won't turn on at all and that absolutely nothing can fix it, that's clearly not the case with your iPhone :) Like I said, you should probably get in touch with your carrier :)

If the phone was unlocked through unofficial channels and you have upgraded to 2.2.1 through iTunes then you have, unfortunately, pretty much permanently removed the unlock: There is currently no way to unlock a phone that has been upgraded to 2.2.1 through iTunes

oops.. sorry umm

so is my iphone pretty much useless..? no way to downgrade it?

Let's ascertain the facts.

Your phone is now locked to your official carrier, again, because of stock 2.2.1. If your sim card is with an official carrier, it should still work.

But now you are stuck with the Slide screen page. Which means the phone is not activated.

I will suggest that you do a full restore using stock 2.2.1 using your sim card again, because you stated that it was used to activate the previous iPhone. There should not be an issue of activating another iPhone.

If this does not work, try to borrow another official carrier sim card to activate your phone. It should work, then attempt to connect your iPhone using your own sim card.

You can't currently downgrade the baseband (the bit that does the phone functions) from the 2.2.1 one once it's been upgraded.
You haven't answered the question around whether you are using an official sim on an official provider but I suspect you're not.
If that's the case then at the moment you are stuck: activating with an official sim won't help either because as soon as you put your sim back in the phone will lock and need reactivating, taking you back to square one.

We really need to know if it's an official sim or not before any more advise can be given

Mine is an official sim card, the same one i activated my iphone with but my itunes wont detect it

Well if you are with "3" in Hong Kong then you had no need of an unlocked phone. If you are not with "3" then you could have bought a factory unlocked phone from Apple directly, which you could have upgraded with no problem.

What you've bought by the sound of it is a hacked phone that was jailbroken and software unlocked, and the upgrade to 2.2.1 has killed the unlock. Depending on which country it originated from, it is now locked back to the original carrier. (eg if it was sourced from the UK it's now locked to O2-UK)

However, all is not lost:

- if your phone has bootloader 5.8 then see this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/686316/

- if it doesn't, see this one:

Another quick way to check your boot loader is enter your serial number on this website, and find out the manufacture date.

If your iPhone was manufactured before September (2008), you are 5.8. Otherwise, you could possibly be at 5.9 (that can't be downgraded, yet)

2.2.1 mystery

Hi guys,

Ive been successful with 2 phones so far, but Im lost on this one.¨

Sure could use your expertise!

Im attempting to upgrade a 2.2.1 G2 phone to 3.0 using Pwnage Tool. I used it with the last good unlocking, but with that phone i started with 1.1.4 and a G1 phone.

I go through them motions but in the end its says I cant alt restore with the custom firm ware as it says 'The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible.

Im from norway, the phone was bought in the USA and used to be a legit At&t contracted phone. Its stuck in DFU mode.

Any suggestions would be great. It is a dark phone now but I can wake it up to a ememgency slide only if I restore without using the custom file. Sure hope to hear from you!

Cheers from Norway
