A mate has given me his iPod to look after overnight. It's windows formatted, as opposed to my Mac formatted one... When I open it up in iTunes, it lets me listen to his music, which is nice... But I've noticed he's running Firmware 2.0.1. iTunes keeps asking me whether I want to update it, which I'd love to - but would updating it on a mac change it to be mac compatible only? Would he get it back and have trouble connecting to it?

No advice about not screwing with my friends devices please :p

Damn, I so wanted to...

Well, in English, installing the Mac firmware for the iPod on a Windows-formatted iPod means you have to delete all iPod songs. Likewise, installing the Windows firmware for the iPod on a Mac-formatted iPod means you have to delete all iPod songs.

heh, so that's a big no then? I'll just tell him to get off his arse and install the windows version - i'm assuming there's a Windows 2.1? Sorry to say the w-word so much :/ :p

im pretty sure it won't delete all the songs off, but i think it may re-format it to mac. not sure about reformatting, but it won't delete all of his songs.
i think there is a windows 2.1. it'd be pretty stupid to have 2.0.1 for windows and 2.1 for mac when they're both ipods.

HEY!

Why are you screwing with your "friend's" iPod anyway?!?!!?

Haha... i had to say it!

With friends like you....... ;-)

If it re-formats it for the Mac then all the song WILL be deleted!

Well, if you HAVE to know, he was putting it down as a bit of colatoral so he could borrow my old iBook over the weekend.... I sense and imminent switcher!! The whole question was just cos I'm a bit of an update freak and got a bit twichy when I saw 2.0.1 as his firmware version... I went into school one day and one of the eMacs was still running 10.2.0... I almost fainted... :D

DON'T use the updater..it will completely wipe it and make it an hfts+ drive instead of one that windows will understand...so your friend will have to wipe it again once he gets back on his machine. Your best bet at getting any music off is trying a podrip program from iPodlounge.com cheers...and don't "mess" with the iPod.
