I've done about 8 hours of editing without saving, and the image is still open. Is it possible to recover all my edits after accidentally clicking on the original snapshot in the history browser and making another edit? Doing this has erased all of my edits since the beginning from the browser.

Urgent. Lost history in photoshop. Can this be restored?

If you've only made one edit since clicking on the original snapshot, I think you might be ok. You should be able to just do Command-Z to undo, and your old history should show up in the history palette again, but grayed out. You should then be able to click on the last one in the list and have everything back. If you've made more than one edit, though, I think you're stuck.
Disclaimer...the machine I'm on right now has CS3, and I tried it with a sample file and that's how it worked for me. I don't know offhand if newer versions are different or not. Please don't come after me if it doesn't work

Choose "Save as" and rename the file into something like "filename-V2". Now you just saved the document in it's last state of editing. It's save on your HDD. Make sure you save it in PSD format with use of layers.
Working like this prevents you from saving changes on the current file you're working at.
After saving ("Save As") the file, you can go all the way back in your History tab by clicking the section I've marked with green:
Once you did this, you'll see the document as you opened it.
Next: to make sure nothing strange will happen you save this state of the document with again, "Save as".
Nothing will go wrong this way and there's nothing to sweat about. Good luck!

For as long as I've been using Photoshop (since version 5 or 6 I think?) I never knew it had history
