PLEASE DISREGARD. I would delete this post if I could, but I went ahead and restarted both iMac and started the process again and there was no delay this time at that step.

i received my new 2019 iMac today and after much research and deliberating I decided to simply use migration assistant to set it up (from my late 2014 Retina iMac). I started up the new iMac and immediately chose to use the migration assistant. It to,d me the new iMac needed a system update so I let it do that and when finished opened back up on the migration assistant screen. I set up migration assistant on both iMacs (1 to “migrate to” and the new one to receive the transfer). The old iMac showed on the new one and I selected it. Both iMacs ARE connected to the same wi-fi network. So, after selecting the old iMac to transfer from, I clicked “continue” and the screen showed “checking James’s iMac” (thanks the name of my old iMac).

That is a long explanation to show I think I did everything correctly. Now, here’s my simple question, “how long should it take ‘checking James’s iMac’ before it gets to the next step asking me what to transfer? It’s been checking for an hour so i’m Afraid it is stuck ,but don’t want to stop the process in case it’s not stuck. I know the actual transfer will take many hours, but thought this “checking” process would be fairly quick.

it can take a while for sure - especially if it is via wifi and not on a wired connection. Also depends on how much info, apps, pics, music, videos etc.

best to let it run and not interupt it - I find migration is very reliable and worth the wait if you don't mess with it
