[URGENT]my new iMac's really strange..

Hi
First of all, i am new to mac so i dont know much about it and how to do things-
Anyways, I've just received my iMac 27" 2.9GHz i7 today. (finally).. and ive added 8GB RAM(4x2) straight after unpacking it. (got them from mrmemory)
Its been about 3 hours since I turned it on-

I have been basically trying to install adobe collection/office etc- but it got frozen 3 times already, i don't think this is normal- even my 3 yr old laptop doesn't do this.
I was installing Adobe when it happened for the first time, the % mark just stopped going up and i couldn't do anything else, i couldn't even shut it down through apple button but had to press the power button on the back of iMac.
It happened again when i was moving photos from my external hard-drive to iPhoto. This is a brand new machine and has 12GB RAM (4 basic + 8GB), so it should not have this kinda problem. is this because of these two new RAM? (they are both new as well, i got them out from the package right before installing them- and my imac recognises them)

Also the whole machine is really hot, especially the top of the monitor is just 'scorching'-

I have absolutely no idea why my new iMac is doing this, and im really disappointed - can anyone tell me why and what i can do please?

bad idea to have added the ram right away. you want to isolate components to see where the problem is. now you'll have to take it back out to find out. its quite possible the ram is the culprit.

the heat is normal. the top is the vent where all the heat comes out.

Take out the extra RAM and see if it makes a different just using 4GB.

Heat? I remember the i7 iMac I used to own getting quite toasty on the top. iStatMenus will give you proper temperature readouts.

Thank you for your reply, I ordered it online to get the student discount as well as to choose options- So do i have to take it back to the apple store nearby or send it back or soemthing?? I am so dissapointed...

You need to take out the third-party, non-official, Apple RAM to see if that is causing the problem before you even think about returning it.

I did check from System Profiler, and it says all 4 RAM are ok. now im scared whether I picked one of the 'bad' ones? ( i did hear iMac tends to get alot of false machines... )....

Take the RAM out.

RAM may appear in profiler. It may appear to work. It may then have an internal flaw that generates errors that crash the system. Take it out, and try with the 4GB of RAM Apple sold you.

Yes, there are faulty Macs. Not many, so stands a chance you didn't get one.

I will take them out if it happens again... but i got what it said to be the one for this machine..(like, ticking Apple->iMAC->version)
