I logged into my Gmail account and synced only email. I did not know my contacts were saved in gmail. It deleted all the contacts on my iPhone.

When I went to iMessages the messages were still there but no names. Just numbers.

I quickly went back and turned on contacts for my gmail. Slowly, they started show up again but it felt like an eternity.

Now, it seems as though my contacts are back in my iMessages with names and pictures.

Am I back to normal now? Is there anything more I need to do?

Please help

Sounds like you’re good to go. What shows up in your contacts app?

If you have contacts then it should have all your gmail contacts in there

Thank you man! I feel so relieved. I see a bunch of contacts when I open the contacts app

So I’m guessing they aren’t saved on my iPhone? Like the hard drive?

Correct, they are not saved to your phone. iPhone is just reading the contacts from your google account.

Use your iCloud account to save the contacts to it.
JAV has a good point. If you save your contacts to iCloud, you can get some handy things (like contact grouping) that gmail won’t give you.

The DOWNSIDE is that new contacts created with iphone using iCloud contacts would not be used when composing emails in gmail. And if you keep contacts in both places, you would have to continually update both.

So for simplicity, maybe just stick with gmail contacts saving.

Thank you so, so much, and everyone else who helped me. I have had iPhones for so long yet still so much I can learn.
