urgent! urgent! disk utility finds HD error

I ran disk utility yesterday and it told me I needed to repair my start up disk: minor repair is needed, some problem with volume header.

I booted from the Tiger DVD ran disk utility once again, it corrected the error.

Last night it found the same error again, so once again I went through the same procedure, everything repaired again.

We had a power failure at home twice in the last few days, both times when the mac was switched on. The first one before the first error and repair, the second one before the second erro report. Could a power failure cause such problems with the HD?

How much should I be worried? (meaning, could this be a sign of a HD failure coming soon? DU telles me SMART status is `verified')

Yeah, it could be hard drive failure. Get everything backed up and keep an eye on the SMART status. Maybe start looking around for a good price on a hard drive.

madjew is right about the back up, but i do not think you are approaching an HDD failure. Did you check smart status? there is a little application, I can't recall the name, but go onto versiontracker and type in smart status and take a look, you should find it quickly.

How about download main menu, run clean system cache, then run disk repair, and then restart.

Ouch....Would Apple replace the HD should it fail? I still have applecare

Aniej: I am using Onyx. That's how I found out about the error in the first place..the latest version does some initial checks when you start it.

I'm pretty sure AppleCare will replace the drive for you, if necessary. It might be worth giving them a call to hear what they think. I have to disagree with Aniej because he's smelly. Consecutive hard drive errors are a pretty good (bad) indication the drive is on its last legs. It could well have been the power failure that caused this, although I wouldn't say that for sure. Good luck with AppleCare.

Update: I think it was the power failures. After the last repair I checked again a couple of times and all seems to be alright (no errors)

Both of the iMacs I have had the exact same error after the update to 10.4.9... Hasn't happend since.
