Hi guys,

I'm developing a website project at the moment and according to Godaddy.com, the URL I want for it is gone. However, when I check it, it's not an established site just one of those crappy ad indexes that serves no purpose in life.

Godaddy has a URL broker service that's $59.99 plus 10% commission of the final price should you manage to negotiate for the URL.

Has anyone used such a service and do you have any other recommendations for trying to purchase a taken URL?

Cheers!

about 1-2 years ago, I had the same problem as you did. I tried to take the matter into my own hands and contacted the company holding the stupid ad index. Well, the thing was, the stupid company wanted almost $1000 for the stupid domain. I'll recommend just coming up with a new address.

of course, your mileage may vary so take this with a grain of salt..

Try to contact the current owner of the domain, using the email on the WHOIS info. If you reach an agreement with the domain owner use an escrow service. They will help you with the transfer.

Also check if the parking page has a link with a price or something. Some domain owners let you know how much they want.

The easiest and cheapest option is to think on a new domain.

Excellent, thanks guys. I have now contacted the registered owner via e-mail as there's no valid number to call.

I have been racking my brains to come up with a different domain name or the possible variations. One option that comes up is the same name but with "online" before or after. It's the closest I like, but there's not going to be any "offline" version and it makes it all a bit clunky.

What do you guys think? I appreciate it's hard to comment when you don't know the actual name in question but I'm not keen on publishing it on an open internet forum. ;)

The owner has now come back asking me for an offer! Any suggestions how I might find the value of the URL in question?

Cheers!

But the horse's head will cost more than the domain! ;)

actually.. luca brasi was not part of the horse thingy.. he was the one that helped vito corleone make an offer to the band leader that didn't want to release johnny fontane.. the offer was that either his signature or his brains (of the band leader) were going to be on the contract..

/runs to watch the movie again

Clearly too long since I watched it, which is a crime seeing as 2, then 1 are my favourite films ever.

I havent used the godaddy domain broker yet. I had the same problem, I would try to think of a new domain.

I've just used the godaddy appraisal system and got an answer pretty quickly so will submit an offer.
