I'm trying to get my head around using custom url's etc with launcher apps to create a neat widget for certain things, if this is possible.

So for example, I want to create a widget to turn on a smart plug. The smart plug can be controlled using either the TP Link Kasa app or my Amazon Alexa app. I couldn't find anything about url's for Kasa, so focused on the alexa app. I found that if I type 'alexa://' in the url, I now have a widget that will open the Alexa app (so the same as just clicking on the app icon itself). Is there a way that I can add to that url to take me to the device called 'The Lamp' which is in the 'Smart Home' section of the Alexa app?

For URL schemes the Launcher widget and the Magic Launcher Pro widgets/apps are the way to go.
If the developer of an app such as Kasa doesn't support URL schemes to launch the app or certain URL schemes for certain features you can't launch them in a good way. Do reach out to the developer of the apps and features you are trying to launch from a Launcher widget and ask them to develop this in their app and supply the URL schemes on their website/App Store description.

In the search in Launcher I also couldn't find TP Link Kasa. You can always request the developer of Launcher to check if the app can be launched (besides reaching out to TP Link about it or checking their site).
In the search in Launcher I could only find Alexa (alexa://) to launch the app but not separate sub launchers for it.

Another great option that you have is creating a Workflow for it via the Apple Workflow app which also has widgets.
See a workflow here that you can download for the Kasa that someone created. See also this post on Reddit.
