US AppleCare for UK iMac

Hi, I am wanting to buy AppleCare for my nearly 3 month old iMac; But the prices here in the UK are pretty crazy; and i am seeing that US ebay seems to have many cheap AppleCare packages.

could i please have some advise; i want to know if it would work to use the US applecare on my UK iMac...

...I called Apple, and they said it wasn't, but i really don't trust them, as they would clearly rather have £139 than £60.

My situation is the otherway round (US Mac in UK). As soon as I got my Macbook Pro home from the US I registered it with Apple online with my UK address. Didn't bother with the apple care but...

My brother did exactly the same thing (US Mac in the UK, registered it in the UK) and a UK Apple rep rang him up a few days before the standard warranty ended and convinced him to get the Applecare plan. No questions asked, fully covered....

I purchased my iMac from the Apple Store online here in Japan. I purchased AppleCare from L.A. Computer in the United States.

It worked perfectly fine and I am now covered for 3 years. I wouldn't expect you would have any issues at all.

I bought my MacBook in Sweden, and Apple Care in Japan. Registered over the phone with Apple and works like a charm.

I contacted Apple a few days ago about this as I have a relative traveling to the US in the next few weeks and was thinking about asking them to get me Applecare for both my iMac and MacBook. I used the chat feature on the Apple Store UK website to ask the question, they responded by saying that Applecare for portables i.e. a MacBook can be bought anywhere, but Applecare for desktops i.e. an iMac cannot.

Sounds a bit fishy to me, what if I was to move to the US? Surely they wouldn't deny me Applecare just because the machine had been purchased in the UK, and vice versa!

In any case I'll be using eBay for my future Applecare and .Mac needs from now on

Yeah but don't forget the pack you get isn't really worth the cardboard it's made out of, you're paying for the Applecare coverage itself which in terms of what you get is just a code [correct me if I'm wrong as I've yet to purchase Applecare], so the big question is do the codes in the US packs entitle you to the same coverage in the UK as a UK pack would.

Say Joe Bloggs a web designer from London decides to buy a brand new MP and with it he purchases Applecare, a few weeks later he is offered a job in New York and as such he has to move there, surely Apple can't turn round and say his Applecare is invalid in the US because it was bought in the UK!?

I fear some careful reading of the Applecare T&Cs is in order...

As I said above I purchased AppleCare coverage for an iMac I bought in Japan from an online retailer in the US. It worked fine. The Apple rep may have been quoting you the fine print but I can assure you AppleCare will work no matter where you buy it.

As for the coverage itself, YES it is global. That is 100% for certain. Right in the little AppleCare manual they list all the contact information for all the Apple Service Centers around the world you can contact if your Mac runs into any trouble.

Strange. This def' isn't my brother's experience. US bought iMac, registered under a UK address - Apple Uk rang HIM to offer him Apple Care at the end of the year...

i am really not sure what i should do, i suppose if i did buy a US applecare for my UK iMac, and it didnt work, i could always sell it again on US ebay!
