It's really no surprise the US Army opted for an Android phone over an iPhone. Android phones allow the US Army to build its own specific hardware and not rely on a company like Apple for system-level improvements.
This is the major reason why it makes more sense for android to be on an army smartphone rather then the iOS. They can build a specifically designed phone and OS to handle the unique needs for smartphones in combat

Were they actually ever considering the iPhone? Sounds like trying to make a story out of nothing.

Yes, they were. However, it doesn't really matter because the iPhone is being used in other parts of the Army and will likely continue to be used despite this "official" endorsement of Android. Ultimately for field operations and Apple's refusal to allow iOS on any other device than an Apple-made device made the decision a no-brainer.

Perhaps they decided not to go for it because it took them 10 months to deliver a white iphone... who knows how long it would take them to deliver a camouflage one?

I have to say the iPhone looks pretty good in camo.
