I don't know if this has been said before or not but I downloaded the USA Today app last night and am blown away by the quality of it.

Despite living in the UK, I take an interest in global news as a whole for which I depend usually on the NY Times and Independent site. After dispairing over the slowness of the NY Times app, I went off in search of another app.

The USA Today app icon caught my eye as a clean, unobstrusive and matte-ified, saw the free price and immediately downloaded it. I'm totally loving the speed of the app and overall design elements such as the Facebook-esque scroll bar.

I just thought I'd share the USA Today love. :D

It is very nicely designed. It has a very USA Today feel to it, which isn't a shocker. The AP & New York Times apps are useful as well, but they don't have the same polish.

I would like to see ESPN take a whack at this, but if you have seen their mobile site, I'm afraid it'll be another bunch of clutter just like the mobile site and espn.com. I mean I don't need something filling up every inch of my screen and 15 videos playing the moment everything loads.

Thanks for the brief reviews! I'm not super impressed with the NYT app so far, either. I might check it out myself. I would usually be disinclined because I don't care for the journalistic quality of USA Today, but sometimes they have really good fluffier pieces (I don't care for their politics, world, business coverage, but their coverage of retail and gadgets and entertainment is not bad, and occasionally they do some great basic health pieces with excellent graphics).

I gave up on the New York Times app and have gone to using mobile.nytimes.com. I've put its icon on the device along with other news applications. It is much quicker than the native app, at least the last time I tried it.

Edit: I agree that the USA Today app is very nicely done.

Thanks to the OP for the info.

Just downloaded and it has a great UI.

Easy to navigate, fast, and of course, the pics are nice!

It was a nice surprise to see that they really put some effort into it instead of a quick mockup.

i downloaded this app because of this positive thread and am also impressed. It is really well designed and I actually felt compelled to browse sections that I don't normally bother with other news apps/websites. It's nice to have the local temp on the screen.

The voting section with multiple polls in 4 different areas is really fun! Who knew that 45% of all of these polled wear their underwear until they have holes in them! :p

Thanks for the tip; USA Today will wonder where all the free press came from!

agreed ... love the USA Today app ... I originally installed the AP News app before USA Today existed ... love AP News as well, especially after the update ... anywho ... both apps remain on my iPhone as I can't seem to part with either AP or USA Today.
