USB 3 issues

I have a DAS with USB 3 attached to my 2012 MacMini and even if I have the system set to no sleep and no spin down drives, the DAS drives disconnect themselves without warning and incorrectly, so I constantly get the system message about disconnecting drives without ejecting first.
Any ideas?
