Hello forum.

Within a matter of about two days, first the bluetooth module of my MacPro 4,1 Early 2009 (which I’d love to continue using because in contains paid for cloudless Adobe Software that does everything I need it to) failed, set in again, failed over; then, all external USB devices did: Keyboard and mouse connected through my ACD stopped working, most external hard drives were allegedly ejected incorrectly or actually not mounted, and finally all apps stood still. Without external hard drives (with mouse and keyboard connected though), all seems to work fine so far.

Any idea what might cause this?

Thanks so much!

Try a deep NVRAM reset, then run AHT/ASD and see what is really defective.

You need an Apple OEM GPU (HD 2600XT, 8800GT, Quadro FX 5600, GT120, HD 4870/5770/5870) to run AHT/ASD. AHT/ASD can be used with PC flashed GPUs, but will fail mid test when the GPU sensors are checked. Non flashed PC GPUs won't work at all. You need to boot completely vanilla, no OC, to use AHT/ASD.

If you don't have AHT/ASD, you can get AHT links and instructions on how to install it on this GitHub article.

AHT, you need 022-4831-A.dmg:

The ASD version that you need is 3S149. The AHT instructions are valid for creating an ASD USB key and Apple provides a PDF with it.

ASD, you need 3S149:

For people that have an early-2009 with MP5,1 firmware, it also needs MP5,1 versions of AHT (022-4831-A) and ASD (3S149).

Hello tsialex, thanks. Does ATI Radeon HD 5770 count as Apple OEM GPU? Edit: Ok, not the smartest question. I can simply try and see if the HT works. I ran into another problem though (I can’t follow the instructions on the GitHub page because somehow, although permissions say otherwise, I can’t copy any files into the coreservices folder. But since that seems to be another problem, I'll ask about that in another thread and report back then.) — Thanks again for you reply, talk later!

Now—I ran both AHT and ASD(OS).

AHT yielded Error 4MEM/62/40000006: 0x78173998 on first run, o second run none though.

ASD found:

Does that tell you anything? I never realized there where any problems with video, and I see no connection to USB and Bluetooth problems. Do you?

Start testing each one of your DIMMs alone to see the one failing, when you have identified the defective one, do all tests again.

I checked both AHT and ASD, none of them does single DIMM testing. Any recommendations? Thanks again!

Ok, I did that, and while the tests found nothing when testing with all four slots occupied, it didn’t even start up with only the fourth one containing a RAM module. Changing the module changed nothing, so: Great tip, really, thanks a lot, I wouldn’t have thought of that testing method. So simple, so logical.

Now, it's clear slot 4 is broken. With that slot unoccupied, all seems to run smoothly. I’ll ask a repair shop if that can be repaired. In the meanwhile, I think about replacing the remaining two modules (4GB each) with bigger ones rather than repairing. I heard somewhere that slot 1 and 2 on the one hand, and 3 and 4 on the other, must always be equipped with the same modules (like 4GB-4GB of the same type in slot 1 and 2 … ). That's why I now left in only two. Do you happen to know if that is correct?

Again, thanks so much for your quick and extremely helpful answers!

Install 3 DIMMs of the same size, you can install 48GB even with DIMM slot-4 being non-operational. Slots 1/2/3 corresponds to channels 1/2/3, slot-4 is shares channel-3 with slot-3.

Thats good news. I’ll do that. For use of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign (no video, no gaming) would you recommend registered RAM, or unbuffered?
