usb and time machine

launched time machine with an external drive, and all went as planned.

my concern is only that it is a 40g write, and it's going to take all of 24 hrs.

my questions are these: is this a typical amount of time to write 40gs? it seems awfully long.

and secondly, i plugged the usb2 cable in to the unpowered port of my keyboard. then i got to thinking, is that port 1.1? if so, that might go a long way to explaining the slow pace.

can someone with more experience tell me?

data usually isn't formed of one continuous stream of information. what is taking your computer longer to copy those files is not so much the size of the files, but more the number.
 
The old white keyboard only has USB 1.1, so don't use it for connecting hard drives, use the USB ports on your Mac or a USB 2.0 hub.

The new aluminium keyboard has unpowered USB 2.0 so that should be OK to use.

thanks, was able to confirm the 1.1 slot already. guess i'll have to just let this finish, and change ports afterward. slow as it is, i ain't messing with it when it's 75 percent finished.
 
well, i bit the bullet. i stopped the backup, fired up disk utility and erased my external, reconnected to a usb 2.0 port and reinitiated. pain in the ... but the transfer will complete in about 4 hrs., unlike the 24 plus i was working on.

had 30 of 40 gigs transferred, but i just couldn't take it. i needed to know how fast usb2.0 would be anyway. just worried i've half fried my external before getting an initial backup.

a follow up concern -- once i have that backup, i am thinking of erasing and installing on my internal, using the leopard install dvd and it's migration assistant and transferring right back to a fresh install from the tm backup. the reason is i notice that leopard is not flying. indeed, i have noticed that disk utility spins and spins before it will repair permissions or verify a disk. other slow downs as well. it just ain't flying as i'd like, and i have a burning urge to know if a fresh install would solve it.

is this something you would do, or am i getting carried away?
