Just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this.

All of a sudden, all USB devices go dead, all usb drives throw up a unsafe unmount notification, all peripherals / hubs etc are effectively gone, but Bluetoth peripherals remain connected, and the system keeps running.

Eventually, the USB bus seems to reset / restart, and things come back.

Further behaviour noticed - I'd had a hub partially unplugged (hadn't noticed it had detached from the underside of a desk and was hanging by its cable).

In VMWare fusion's USB Hardware listing, the built-in card readers in my three displays (which were USB downstream of the hub) were rapidly appearing and disappearing.

The system had been restarted / power cycled a couple of times since the cable issue, but I'm starting to think that perhaps the USB controllers in the displays were having some sort of internal looping issue, since the displays had not been restarted. Plugging / unplugging the displays from the hub didn't stop the behaviour. Maybe that had caused some sort of buffer overrun, leading to the USB bus as a whole to crash.

Does that sound like a reasonable hypothesis?
