I have two iMacs, an old 2009 iMac 24” and a new 2017 iMac 27”. I got one startech.com usb3 to sata3 adapter cable to get a 240gb SSD connected on both machines. This has worked great. When using it, the end of the cable where it goes into the SSD warms up when I move files to and from it. This is fine. It’s a normal warm temperature.

I *just* go the new USB-c gen2 to sata3 adapter cable for the 2017 iMac 27” to connect the same SSD but get more performance out of it, which it does. It works great.

However, I noticed right away that the end of the cable where it goes into the SSD is warm even when I am not using it. Just idle. The heat doesn’t get worse over time, but it’s noticeably warmer than the other usb3 cable, and in idle time.

I hope this explains it.

Do you guys think this is normal, that it is noticeably warmer when it's just idle/not-used when connected to the usb-c port on the new imac?
