USB Charging Issues?

Hey everyone,

My iPad does not seem to charge over USB on my Mac Mini or Desktop PC. It says "Not Charging" next to the battery. It does however charge just fine with the AC Adaptor.

Is this normal behavior? I should also mention that it's NOT plugged into a hub, it's directly into the mac mini/desktop.

I am having the exact same problem, my iPad will not charge via USB. It only charges when using the wall adapter.

I have a Mac Pro and have tried all of my usb ports and the ports on my Apple Cinema Display and nothing seems to work. I did't even notice at first but then saw the "Not Charging" next to the battery. Odd as it syncs with itunes fine.

Any other people having this problem, let us know so we can figure this out.

Same here. I believe the iPad requires 10 volts to charge while USB only puts out 5 volts.

So, normal behavior...
 
Same here using my HP work laptop. It does charge from a USB wall adapter that I have though. Interesting
 
Your mini does not provide enough amps to charge the internal battery. It's nothing to do with volts as all USB devices are 5v.

*edit. Just checked the specs of the mini and the ipad charger and the mini providing the bus is not full charge the ipad but you definatly cannot or should I say should not plug it into the side of a USB keyboard as it draws more than the keyboard can give.
 
Same problems here. Glad I am getting 2 docks. One to sync with and one to charge with. 2nd one is on its way.
 
It say's "Not Charging" because it's full. I had the same issue but when I unplugged it, it was full.

My ipad didn't charge thru my belkin usb hub (although it did sync), but did charge when connected directly to my macbook pro. Interestingly, i've had some weird things happening with my iphone as well. for about a week the phone wouldn't charge thru the belkin usb hub for some reason, it would sync, but not charge.
 
We get the "not charging" too, and the battery was at 80%.

BTW, charging initially won't screw up the battery. At worst, the calibration will be off a little.

No, it says 100% when full and plugged in. My Early 2009 iMac 24" seems to be able to charge it just fine.
 
The iPad can only be charged with the iPad power brick (official from Apple). Though in some cases you can charge it on your computer, but it will be very slow and be very bad for the battery (since you are discharging the battery and it's trying to charge at the same time, albeit without enough amperage).
 
My Belkin hub won't charge the iPad either. I did also have issues with a kodak camera with the USB charging, plugging it in directly to my computer charged the camera, but not using the usb hub. After I get all my stuff synced onto the ipad, I will try a direct connect to my macbook, I expect it to charge just like the camera.

I wonder if someone is making an upgraded USB hub that will charge USB devices better, it will suck to have to plug it into the wall to recharge all the time.
 
Plugged it back into my 2 yr old MacBook after draining 20% of th battery and it won't charge. Onlynworks when i plug into the wall. That is lame.

Please stop posting that the iPad requires 10 volts.
There is no such thing as a 10 volt USB port. A standard USB port provides 500 ma of power (.5 amps), a high power USB port will provide up to 1000ma (1 amp).
The provided 10 WATT charger provides 2000 ma or 2 amps since USB is always 5 volts.

Remember people volts X amps = watts.
 
the problem here is most likely not the Ipad but rather certain USB controllers.

USB spec states a USB port must be able to provide a maximum of 500ma at 5v, however thats only after negotiation with the device first, a normal device is limited to 100ma, for the Ipad to be able to have the full 500ma the USB controller must accept is really needs it.

now the Ipad's battery can hold 6.61A (24.8w at 3.75v) to charge the battery from flat at 500ma would still take around 12 hours, at the lower power out put of 100am it would take over 50 hours.

now as have been stated there is a 1A option on some ports but not much is fitted with these.

Apples biggest mistake here was not anything other than allowing charging through the dock connector, they have opened them selves up to people assuming it can be charged via USB, they would have been better using a dedicated connector to prevent this.
 
Keep in mind that with some computer USB ports, the iPad WILL charge but ONLY when the display is turned off. The minute you turn on the display, you'll see "Not Charging" because the display is sucking down so much juice.

And, as mentioned, even if it does charge via your computer's USB port, unless you have a computer with one of those 1amp ports (no Mac does), it will take somewhere between really long and forever to complete the charge.

Use the wall adapter.
