Hello all,

I have a 2012 Revised Macbook Pro 13" Which came with 10.7, I got it in early december so also got the free Update to 10.8, but after updating it to 10.8 I have this strange problem,

1. Any device I connect via usb including iPhone / iPad freezes the computer for about 10 seconds until I press the space bar or something.

2. Sometimes While I type text on the forums itself it starts lagging only the text.

Any idea on what could be wrong?

Regards,

How many devices do you have connected to it and what I/O are they using? I think your usb host controller is overloaded and you should reset the NVRAM and the SMC.

NVRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Don't know if this is a one off issue?

It might be a one off, but the only reason I can think of that would cause the issue is that the usb host controller is being overtasked(or thinks it is), which results in the lag.

Do you happen to run Windows or any other OS in VMWare/Parallels/VirtualBox?

Really Thanks a lot for all the effort,

Nope, not running any other os, nor is the HD partitioned, in fact I do not even connect any external HDD,

So annoying cause sometimes it just freezes when I connect the iPad / iPhone and then starts lagging at places like this box where I type etc.

Hi,
I've got the same strange issue for about a month.
When I plug in a phone or whatever on a usb port on my macbook 10.8.2 it freezes (can't move the mouse or anything) for a few seconds.

You're not the only ones, I've had this issue for quite a while and on more than one macbook pro too. It's obviously very poor coding somewhere that it locks the device for a few seconds, mouse becomes totally unresponsive.

Like you I don't have to have anything else connected to a port or be running any apps at all. It's a real annoyance and it's nothing new, it's done it in difference versions of OSX for me too, it used to do it on my old macbook pro and that was over a year ago.

So it's definitely a bug somewhere, just can't understand why it doesn't effect everybody!

I'm having the same issue on the retina MacBook Pro. It's not a problem with a particular program from what I can see (some people have noted issues with Android File Transfer - I don't have that installed). Any suggestions would be welcomed. I've tried reseting PRAM/NVRAM and SMC with no effect.

Problem solved?

Hello

I have a temporary problem solved. Yesterday, for other reasons, I did a disk analysis and fix (in fact, an SSD, but similar procedure). Today I needed to connect a printer and later an external disk. On both situations it computer continued answering.

I'll keep you posted about how things continue here.
Best,

Best,

So you're saying that problems with the system drive caused this, and running a repair on the drive fixed the USB issue?

I have the same problem in my rMBP mid 2012, running both 10.8.2 and 10.8.3, everytime I connect a USB device the trackpad and the keyboard freeze from 3 to 5 seconds. Although scanning the disk fix it temporary (?????), the most efective solution is just move the pointer with the trackpad while connecting, doing so will avoid the freeze. Really hope they will fix it in 10.8.x, as this downgrade in quality control in every release, will keep me out of 10.9 or whatever....

I know as stupid as it seems, but for now I have this issue solved. If this is temporary, I do not know.

No, it doesn't sound stupid at all, I just wanted to make sure I understood you correctly. I remember way back in the day when the 3.5 floppies came out. I plugged it in wrong and the system acted like it was completely dead. It makes sense to me now, but at the time, I thought it was the stupidest thing. Drives and their file systems can cause the gamut of problems.

I've read other people in discussions.apple.com complaining about Android File Transfer agent being the cause for this. And I try to disable it under User/Login Items, and now the USB freeze is gone! Try it, maybe also work for you.
