USB devices won't mount after OS update

Hello,

I recently updated my OS from 10.5 to 10.6. Since the update my usb flash drives and external hard drive have not been able to mount. They appear in the Disk Utility, however they are unmounted. If I press the 'mount' button the utility says that it cannot be mounted and that I should preform first aid on the device(the first aid, does not resolve the issue). I have had this issue on the four flash drives I have tried and my external hard drive.

I forgot to mention that this only occurs in safe mode, however currently my Mac only functions in safe mode.
