USB/Ext HD not appearing on Desktop

This is a recent issue, but I'm not sure if it's a Sierra glitch. I'm using a 2017 MacBook Air. And yes, I can open them through Go and All My Files, but it was slightly faster when they appeared on desktop (it was also a great indicator of when they'd been ejected as the icon would disappear).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have, in Finder, Finder>Preferences...>General>Show these items on the desktop>Hard disks checked?
