USB Flash Drive - Apple Extreme

Is it possible to use a USB Flash drive, connected to an Airport Extreme, as a backup drive? I only have one computer and will not use the drive for any other purpose except to backup my Macbook via Time Machine.

I was thinking of getting a small 128GB Flash Drive, inserting into the back of the Airport Extreme and having it be the source for backups.

Has anyone tried this or are there any limitations?

You can use that for Time Machine backup as long as you have the newer, tower shaped Extreme. Time Machine is not supported on the older versions.

It will work with a USB key just fine, but that said I would not do it. Those USB keys normally use really cheap and unreliable flash memory and I would not want to use one for backups. Disk speeds don'y matter for a networked backup like that anyway, so I would just buy a cheap USB hard drive if it were me.

You would be far better off getting a 2.5" portable drive or even a 3.5 drive. If you must get a USB flash drive, I recommend you go check out the SanDisk Extreme Pro, Supersonic Magnum and the higher end Lexar Jumpdrive.

These are faster performers and thus a reduced bottleneck.
