I spoke to my Son in Law in Canada today and when I mentioned that I will be buying the OCW kit to shield USB interference he suddenly realised why he is having problems with his windows machine.

Whenever he fires up his USB3 backup drive his mouse goes crazy??

looks like it may not be only an apple problem...

I had a USB 3.0 hub on my 2012 mini

And when the Mac went to sleep , the mouse & external drive connected to the hub disconnects

This thread is the top Google hit for "OCW Kit USB interference". Can you post a link to the product?

I've never heard of USB causing any interference with Bluetooth mice (I'm presuming Bluetooth mice and not cabled ones) -- though another quick search brings up an Intel white paper suggesting that some cables on USB3 ports might cause interference with 2.4GHz Wireless routers.

I would try changing your cables first.

@Che Castro -- Are you saying that the mouse and external drive didn't reconnect on Wake?

Are you experiencing interference on your Bluetooth devices?

What is your Son-in-law's Windows hardware? Seems odd that such different kit would have the same lack of shielding.

It's a fairly hardcore operation on a new machine, just to add a bit of foil! I would investigate shielded cables before taking my brand new Mini to bits!

Do an Internet search; you will find that USB 3.0 interference woes are not limited to Mac Minis connected to OWC external enclosures...

USB 3.0 can also cause problems with WiFi. A MiniStack enclosure killed my WiFi reception (I don't use Bluetooth...) I returned it for a full refund. I haven't run into the same problem with OWC Mercury Elite Pro enclosures.

Some people have reported that switching to a USB 3.0 cable with better shielding fixed the problem. But when I searched for USB 3.0 cables I wasn't able to find one that indicated that it had more robust shielding, so it might require trial-and-error to find a decent cable.

My mac Mini is up three times faster than my prevous Mac and I will not take it apart for at least 6 months. I will be watching this forum to see how every one gets on.

Cheers elo
