Suddenly my MacPro won't detect an inserted USB key. Doesn't matter if it is one of the original ports on the machine or a four port card I added some time ago, or one of the top Thunderbolt ports with a thunderbolt to USB adapter. I have tried resetting NVRAM and SMC numerous times with no change. USB Devices plugged into the ports, like webcam or microphone or external speakers work fine. I have tried numerous different keys. Any ideas?

1) Old or new USB keys?
2) Recognized when the computer is turned on? Recognized when the machine is on and then connected to port?

I've also had issues with older USB keys that were formatted and used with an iMac Late 2015 and then trying to use on the 7,1

Have you fully shut down the machine, inserted the USB key, then started the machine from cold?
Does it still not recognize?

USB key - flash drive or serial key for authorization (iLok)?

They are flash drives. Some are new, some old - but they all have worked fine in this machine up until this month. I have shut down the machine, started it from cold with a key inserted - no detection. When a key with a light is plugged in, it flashes as if detected, but never appears in finder. They don't show up in drive utility either.

Might suggest trying them in another Apple machine and entirely reformatting. It's done the trick in the past with problematic USB SSDs/HDDs.

Nope. And here is another data point - If I plug in an external USB backup drive it is detected and works fine. If I plug in an external USB Card Reader it lights up showing it has power and the light on the slot for the card lights up indicating access. But It doesn't show up in the System Report, on the desktop, disk utilities, or finder.

Maybe it's time to try running the built-in diagnostic on the computer.
