Hi,
Do you think it is a good idea to protect the USB-C ports with a magnetic connector or does that lower transfer speeds?
I mean physically it should actually improve transfer speeds no?

Protect them from what?

As for data, I think some of them do support some level of data transfer, but the max data rate would be specific to the individual manufacturer/model. I'd expect not to see USB3.2 or TB3 data transfer speeds with such a thing but perhaps one exists.

BTW - you might want to ask this question in the Mac Accessories forum since it's not something specific to the Apple Silicon models. There's even a sticky thread there related to USBC cables and such.

I suspect OP has a concern that someone tripping over a USB-C power cable will yank the cable and maybe damage the port... i.e. the issue that the original magsafe addressed.

@ader42 perhaps so. Though that issue is made moot for a lot of folks given the super long battery life of the current M1 models -- there's just a lot less need to string a cable across a walkway where folks can trip over it.

Plus with USBC charging it's super easy to extend battery life with any number of relatively inexpensive USB powerbanks. This $50 20,000mah Anker would add another ~60% time on battery to an M1 MBP - https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Portable-PowerCore-Essential-Compatible-dp-B08LG2X98F/
