I have a brand new MacBook Air which currently has a Superdrive attached to the USB port. I'd like to get a mac compatible digi camera and my wife wants an ipod. Can I simply disconnect the drive and connect the camera/ipod at will or do I have to buy a hub? On my old XP machine it seemed to me the ports were dedicated to their peripherals. Would be grateful for advice.

No hub is necessary. If you don't need the SuperDrive plugged in, then just unplug it from the USB port -- use it only when you need it. You can use the USB port for whatever you need to (iPods, digital cameras, printers, etc.). If you intend to plug in more than one USB based perhapial at a time, then yes, you will need a hub.

USB & SuperDrive

Keep this in mind - the SuperDrive won't work thru a USB hub. It must be connected directly to the MBA's USB port. I have had an external HDD and a printer connected thru a hub without problems.
