this probably has been mentioned before because i guess it is all enough but what struck me when i got an iBook and a mouse to it for when at home is that the USB port (along with all the others) is on the left side... now in the world the majority of the people are right handed... so why put it on the left side?

I prefer the accessibility of the iBook port layout, compared to our HP machine, which has it's ports at the back.
Do a lot of people use external mice on their laptops? My hand is permanently in the trackpad pose and I'm fine with it. What's the problem with using the trackpad? And can you do the scrolling thing with a mouse?

I really like all the ports on the one side on my 12" powerbook, it just looks simple and clean and is very practicle.
At the end of the day on these 12" models, the ports were either on the left or the cd drive was. Either way, i can see there being complaints about being right handed and putting in a cd with your left hand.
Putting the ports on the left is good for the cabling too, it just keeps them out of the way.
I can't imagine things the other way around, it would feel... wrong.

Back when I used my iBook and original Apple optical mouse, this frustrated the heck out of me. But now I've got a PowerBook with ports on both sides and use a wireless mouse (Logitech MX1000) with a gazillion buttons, a scroll wheel that tilts for horizontal scrolling, and more...don't know how I survived without it.

Yeah, my 12" PB USB ports are both on the left. I use a wireless Apple mouse though. You can get them pretty cheap on eBay. I don't know if iBooks come standard with Bluetooth though...

well, considering the ibook is apples "bargin" laptop, they dont really care giving you a ton of ports all over the place. Thats like buying a stripped base model car, then complaining that it has manual windows.
You want a lappy with ports on both sides? get a powerbook.

I like the idea of using a wireless mouse with my iBook, especially useful for presentations. However, I'm still waiting for a wireless Mighty Mouse.
For now I use an ordinary mouse with a cable and had no problems whatsoever.

I think its good to have it on the left if you are right handed.
1. Running the cable around the back takes up a lot of the 'slack' so you dont have a big loop of mouse cable getting in your way.
2. If it was on the right any peripherals you use would constantly keep getting hit by your mouse.
3. The CD drive is on the right.

Frankly I wish they'd return the ports to the back side, where they were on the WallStreet PB.
My new PB is a 17". I knew it was going to be substantially wider, but I wasn't anticipating the nearly 9" of additional width-room required as a consequence of the ports being on the sides. Whose brilliant idea was that, I wonder?
