Back when I used my iBook and original Apple optical mouse, this frustrated the heck out of me. I didn't mind the ports on the left side, as sending the cord around the back of the machine kept it out of the way. However, the cord was about four inches too short to allow me the freedom to use my mouse well.
But now I've got a PowerBook with ports on both sides and use a wireless mouse (Logitech MX1000) with a gazillion buttons, a scroll wheel that tilts for horizontal scrolling, and more...don't know how I survived without it.
I don't know anyone who uses the trackpad on their laptop when at their usual work desk. On the road, yes, but not for full time use.
