Are the USB ports powered during sleep?

Currently on my cMP I have installed a socket on the back for the 12V from an internal SATA power connector. I use this to trigger power on and off to external devices, like audio system and speakers. When the Mac goes to sleep, the audio system is turned off and vice versa because the Hard Disc 12v power is turned off during sleep. This works great and has done since I got my first Mac Pro (this is my second).

But, I want to upgrade to a 6,1 which as far as I can determine has no internal SATA connectors, nor any other HD power that I could tap into. So I was wondering if I could use USB power as the trigger (albeit 5V, but I could deal with that).

On a MP 6,1 are the USB ports powered down while sleeping?

If anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated.

Consider a smart power strip - like https://www.amazon.com/Smart-Strip-LCG-3MVR-Autoswitching-Technology/dp/B0006PUDQK/ or https://www.adorama.com/sslcg3.html

Plug the PC into the blue outlet. When the PC starts, it will energize the green outlets. Adjustable for the "sleep" power threshold. Red outlets always on.

I have considered similar devices to those in the past and even have a couple, but they were incapable of detecting 'sleep'. I'd not seen the above one, they do look better. Might try one if I can find with UK (or even Euro) sockets.

However, I would still like to know about the MP 6,1 USB ports when sleeping.

I don't use sleep on my desktops, but I know USB remains powered on with laptops so I would assume it does on the Mac Pro too. One alternative is to enable hibernatemode 25 in your terminal. I use this on my Macbook Air for better battery life, and notice that USB adatpers with led lights will shut off during sleep, while with the standard sleep hibernatemode they remain powered on. Here's the terminal command I use: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25

Here's a StackExchange discussion that implies "hibernate mode 25" = "standby". If true, it means that the "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25" Terminal command won't work because Apple's article states that no USB devices can be attached.

In my case, I have a SanDisk Extreme Portable USB SSD attached to my mid-2015 15" MBP and the MBP is booted from that SSD. My issue is that if I simply close the lid, the battery will drain completely after several hours and the SSD feels warm to the touch the entire time, which means it's drawing a lot of power constantly and the MBP never hibernates. I've not tried the Terminal command yet, but again, the Apple article indicates no USB drives can be attached. Not sure what to make of that.
