I guess I don't really get it....

14" display ($200) + Mac Mini ($600) + keyboard and trackpad ($150) = $950. You are now within spitting distance of refurbed 13" Macbook Air (which has an SSD and more RAM) or a Macbook Pro (which has a DVD drive and more RAM). Not to mention that the Mac Mini doesn't even have a battery and you have to cart around 4 separate items rather than just 1. If you want something portable, then go with a laptop. This display only makes sense if you have a laptop and need a second display for client presentations or something.

Just my .02 worth.

A 13 inch macbook pro with an ssd is around 1200. vs 950. Not sure which is better for op. Of course if the op has the mini and the keyboard and the track pad the choice is easy. One thing I have found is after 1 or 2 or 3 months I am always needing more addons with my gear.

Well, the base Mac Mini which is what I based my 950 on doesn't have an SSD either, so comparing to the refurbed Macbook Pro at 1020 seems still very valid (I was only pointing out that a refurbed 13" MBA would have an SSD).

Again, I still don't exactly see the point.

True, but a mini with a SSD is not $600, as far as I know.

from a 0 gear in the house start from the beginning.

I buy a macbook pro and an ssd.

If the op has the mini and the keyboard with the track pad it makes sense to buy the toshiba as it cost 200 more. I am not sure if the op has a mini. to the seb you are correct equal comparsion is about 1200 in the states amazon has a new macbook pro for 1100 and sells crucial 128gb ssds for 100 total is about 1200.

putting the mini , tosh screen, keyboard, ssd, trackpad mouse, was about 1050.

myself I would not get the mini setup.
I am thinking I would want the macbook pro.
not sure what the op has on hand.
to get back to the tosh screen it looks tricky to setup the usa reviews state finding the correct drivers as a must. many reviews say it is not good with video. I am also not sure what the op needs to do with his mobile screen.

I already have the 2011 2.7Ghz i7 with 750gig HD. (and third party 8gig ram).

The MBP equivalent costs £1300.00
2.8Ghz i7,
750gig 5400rpm HD
4 gig ram

The MM equivalent costs £1000.00
2.7Ghz i7,
750gig 7200rpm HD
4 gig ram
and keyboard and mouse.

The MBP having a faster CPU but slower HD would be almost identical in performance.

I already have a 24" screen that cost me £180.00.

I bought a Samsung optical drive for £30.00

The mini has a spare HD bay for greater flexibility working with Logic9 and the like.

So for £90 LESS i have the same processing power but with a

24" screen.

ANYWAY.

This is NOT what i started the thread for.

I want to know about the Toshiba screen.

I work at home and away (mainly at home) with Logic 9 and there is NO WAY i'm going to work all day, day after day with a 13" screen with a MBP.

That is why i got a 24" screen, which is great

AND

that is why i'd love to get this 14" USB bus powered screen.

Okay, help me out here why again the 14" screen? What would you use it for? If you have a 24" screen, what is the 14" screen going to do for you?

I'm not the OP, but I thought the point was for portability, you know... Have mini will travel.

I understand the concept, I'm just not sure it's a viable solution in practice.

Well that's really what I am getting at isn't it? I mean, who really wants to take a Mac Mini + keyboard + mouse/trackpad + external screen with them? If you really need portability, you are much better off with a Macbook Pro 13" which you CAN hook to a the 24" screen (I do it all the time).

reading the posts on amazon (usa) make me think it would work on the road for non video use.

Who wants to? I do.

I understand your points.

Here are mine

1.
As i said in my last post, i work mainly from home and some times i work away.

2.
Not everywhere i work on the road has a screen, and so i have had to take my 24" monitor with me.

3.
I also don't like a laptop's mouse/track pad (don't know its proper name). I use left and right click and i use a logitech trackman wheel trackball
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LOGITECH-..._JoysticksJoypadsGamepads&hash=item19d0cee7d6

Its way faster than a laptops mouse/trackpad. And its brilliant on the road as the mouse stays still you can use it on any surface.

In one hand i have 4 controls. The thumb-ball, the scroll wheel and L/R click.
I use these 4 all the time.
There is now way one hand can keep up with that on a laptops mouse/trackpad.
My left hand is busy with keyboard short cuts.

4.
I use loads of keyboard shortcuts with logic 9. I am used to a full size keyboard, it helps with a rapid work flow. Working with Logic pro 9 in a days work, i make hundreds of edits, i could get used to the small keyboard and laptop style mouse but it would slow me down big time and drive me ********** nuts!

5.
If i had a laptop on the road working up to 8 hours straight, i'd need the power supply. So thats no faster than plugging in the power of a mac mini.
If you really want to be picky the Apple Laptop magsafe adapter and chord are more bulky than the mini's single lead.

6.
Points 3. and 4. mean i will always want a full keyboard and trackball mouse.
Both of them together weigh, bugger all.
And they fit in my laptop bag easy. And it takes me about 10 seconds to connect them and another 10 seconds to disconnect them. Is that a hassle?
I can tell you that over the course of a full days work, that doesn't even enter my world.

7.
Setting up a this Toshiba screen ( if it works ) will take about another 10 seconds to set-up, one USB chord, no biggie for me.
The whole point for me starting this thread is to get some info on the Toshiba 14" USB powered screen, for those occasions that i work away where there isn't a good size monitor, like on stage, recording a band.

8.
The Toshiba screen is roughly the same size as a 13"MBP. The mini is tiny, and mouse and keyboard nothing weight/size, i travel with a ton of music gear sometimes, so again, it doesn't compute with me, how much more bulk i am hauling around with this mini set-up.

9.
Anyway, even if i was just going to a cafe and surfing the web, its going to take an extra minute to set-up and break down the screen, mouse and keyboard, and the mini set-up weighs but a little more.

10.
In my last post i mistakenly said the macmini would cost £1000 with keyboard and mouse.
It actually costs £970. Add the 24" screen, Toshiba 14" USB screen and Optical drive and its total is £1300.00.

If i bought a 24" screen the, 13" MBP with track-ball and full keyboard is going to cost me £1550.00.

11.
Not many people seem to talk about EMF's, electrical magnetic fields.
There is ton's and ton's of info on the web about it.

http://www.emfs.info/ for one.

I notice EMF's when using a laptop. (My wife has a 13"MBP). Not wanting to blast myself with EMF's is a big reason for me also to not use a laptop for hours at a time.
I have hired an EMF meter and have done a lot of my own research into this. Having a relatively strong EMF field within 1 foot of the body all day adds up over the years to a potential health risk.
This thread is not the place to go deep in to this, but it is another reason i went for the mini, to get the main source (the CPU) of EMF's 3 to 4 feet away from the body.

Let me get this...

You have a Mac Mini which you occasionally travel with and use a large monitor when you do so. That large monitor is a pain to carry around, thus you are considering this portable 14" monitor.

Here's what I think. For normal use, it's probably just fine. For recording, I'm not sure it's a great move. With USB monitors there is always a little bit of lag. Not typically a huge problem, unless you're doing precision punch-ins or edits. That will get really frustrating, really fast. Considering that punch-ins and edits are standard fare for digital audio engineers, I don't think a USB monitor is a great choice for you.

Carrying a 24" monitor around has to get old, but I don't think you'll be happy with this solution. Unfortunately, going with a smaller desktop style monitor still doesn't really reduce your bulk all that much. The appeal of the Toshiba solution is that it is made for portability, sadly the tech doesn't cut the mustard. If it was USB powered, but connected to HDMI or MDP, it'd be perfect for you, but it isn't.

In the long run, you'll want to consider a notebook for portability. I understand your concerns about EMF's, but honestly you're working in audio recording. You're surrounded by dozens of EMF's all the time (as am I). It's sensible to learn about these things and protect ourselves where we can, but at the end of the day we've gotta get our jobs done. While a laptop may not be a viable solution in the immediate future (you've already invested in the Mini), it's where you'll want to go in the long run.

Thanks for the info on the usb time lag. Though i haven't read any reviews about the monitor that mentions lag.
Yup, any lag inducing tech is to be avoided in music production.
I think i'll wait till thunderbolt monitors become portable and cheaper.

The 14" Toshiba is quite a lot smaller than my Illyama 24" in total bulk.

I might go the macbook pro route in the end, but i wait for a while now.

RE. EMF's.
here is a link showing safe distances.

http://www.emwatch.com/Typical_mG.htm

I have usually 5 to 8 electronic devices on in my home recording studio at any one time.

I have positioned all of them to be no closer than 3 feet from me. The info in the above link shows and i have confirmed this with a hired meter, that at this distance the EMF field is very small.

If i was to get a 15" Macbookpro, i would always work with a usb keyboard and trackball mouse, as my wife does.
This places the Macbookpro 3 feet away.

I'll be sure to throw on my tin foil hat next time I use my laptop (and maybe my tin foil "tent" for the nether region). Frankly, everything I have ever read says our power lines and cell phones are our worst offenders (cell phones largely because we hold them so close to ourselves). The table you linked to, shows that computers emit some of the least EMF. Stand next to a microwave for the 10 minutes you are cooking your TV Dinner and you would have taken in as much as you would for 6 hours of use on your lap. Does your wife use a hair dryer? Heck she can work a whole day with a laptop sitting on her lap and get as much EMF as she did blow drying her hair for 10-15 minutes! And in the case of a hair dryer, she's using it right next to her brain!

I'll take my chances with the low EMF emission from my computers. I'm probably going to die from second hand smoke, asbestos, obesity, and global warming before I die of cancer caused by my computer....

Edit: Further, let's not forget that there are conflicting reports that EMF emissions even cause cancer.

Yes indeed, plenty of conflicting news on EMF's, but you have to go with what you feel is right.
When i use a laptop for an hour or more ( within a foot of me) i feel energetically blasted. I know plenty of people that say the same.
If i use a mobile phone for more than 3 or 4 minutes i can feel the effects of it, which is why i hardly ever use a portable microwave communication device.
I don't have a micro wave oven for good reason. And when i do use one at another persons house, i'll make sure i DONT stand next to it.

Yup a hair dryer is full on. My wife uses things like this less and less.
I think its safe to say that the rampant plague on humanity of cancer has some of its source in EMF's. I am not a scientist but i just know it.

There is WI-FI everywhere, (not in our house though), mobile phone signals every where, police Tetra waves.
Its the way of the world, but it won't last. We are playing with fire, playing God.

Einstein said when Bee's disappear off the face of the Earth, people will last 4 more years (pollination for one thing ).
Well there is more and more evidence that our modern world is having a huge effect on animals like Bees. In England bee population is on a big decline.

I love using technology, but there is a price whether we like it or not for our "wonderous modern world" and we are just seeing the tip of the ice berg.

I was wondering:
Is it possible to have a USB monitor hooked up to a Mac Mini as the only monitor?
Application for me would be mobile use, mounted inside a rack; I use a 24" screen at home.
I was especially looking at the Lenovo LT1421 because it seems to be slim enough to fit inside a 1U tray.
