Well my display is pixel perfect and I haven't had any problems with the iMac except with USB connections.

I have a LaCie 1tb Hard Drive that works perfectly on my MacBook (10.6.2, unibody)

However, when I plug it into my iMac you can see some really tiny sparks when you are plugging it (and other powered USB devices) in. Originally it would work for about 15 minutes and then it would come up with the warning to not unplug the drive without ejecting it properly first. It would eject itself and then come back online a second later. Now when I plug it in, I can see in Disk Utility it see's the USB device, but it doesn't mount the volume and the drive disappears from Disk Util shortly after. So now I can only use it on my MacBook (which works flawlessly).

Any ideas? Should I return the otherwise perfect machine or is there something I am doing wrong?

Thanks so much!

aehm doesnt sound like it there is actually not even much you could do wrong by plugging in a usb whatever , it fits only one way and then the iMac should see what it is and do what its supposed to do with it and sparking and unplugging automatically is not what a imac is supposed to do ,if you plug in usb whatever
so sorry to disapoint you , but return it as quickly as you can to get it replaced and hope your next one will be alright, if not keep on returning them until you get a fully operational one

i just wonder if there is still a item left inside the new iMac that didn`t fail by now
that might sound sarcastic , but i think apple has a real quality issue here and they should react fast
i feel really sorry for everyone who spend that much money and waited so long and gets such disappointment
as i guess it is disappointing to first being happy having no screen issue , no harddrive issue, no psu issue no graphic card issue, ... and then gets a usb issue

Yes I have tested it with another drive, same problem. Oddly printers/usb kb, mouse seem to be fine.

Problem with USB port for new 27" iMac

USB port problem. Only 1 out of the 4 USB ports works with my Nikon Coolpix camera. iPhoto will not recognize the bad ports but when I connect the usb cable to a good port, iPhoto works fine. Any of you are seeing the same problem?

John

Because you are mentioning sparks when plugging in, I'm going to guess the drive has an external power supply? Try plugging the drive into USB first, with the power disconnected, and then turn the power on only after it's all plugged in.

I have a similar problem with a dismounting LaCie 750MB USB drive. Sometimes, after the computer wakes from sleep, I'll get the disconnected usb device warning and the drive icon disappears from the desktop. Powering the drive off and on will bring it back. My firewire drive works perfectly. 27" Imac, I7.
