One major drawback to USB thumb drives being used for audio playback is the lack of a memory. What I mean by this is that if I copy a podcast or a audiobook to the thumb drive and play it in my car it seems to forget where I last left off. Do not have this problem with MP3 CDS. Unless there is a way on the Mac to change this behavior.

The problem is with your car, or more specifically, the MP3 player firmware in your entertainment system. You need to either burn MP3 CDs with your Mac or replace your car with one who's entertainment system supports auto-bookmarking when the source is a USB device.
