I was walking around Mongkok today (Computer heaven of HK) and I saw a 16gb iPad for sale for HKD$6800..........

That's no typo, converts to USD$875.00

I just laughed and walked off!!!

They must be bringing them here as hand luggage.

Are you serious? God... That's almost the same price as a macbook!

No, it's not. MacBooks in Hong Kong are more expensive as well.

Americans get the cheapest electronics. The cheapest cars. The cheapest almost everything.

Similar to the iPhone. I grew up in Hong Kong and 'water/imported goods' were fairly common. Meanwhile, I'm flying back to HK in less than 2 weeks with my $599 iPad 32GB. :D

The one extra iPad that I bought I had sold to a seller who worked for a Hong Kong mobile company. I did get an extra $170 for it minus eBay's fees, so not a bad profit.

Have you had any luck finding cheaper ones yet? With all these people flying from San Fransisco with iPads the prices should be going down, yet they don't seem to be :(
Does anyone have any idea when the iPad will be officially released in Hong Kong or China? Since they are made in Shenzhen (a few kilometers north of Hong Kong) it seems silly to buy one re-imported from the US at nearly twice the price.

You go first. If customs doesn't stop you with a suitcase full of iPads, I'll join you for the second trip.
There are no taxes or import duties in Hong Kong, you can bring pretty much anything that isn't a weapon/drug.

I just went to the mall selling these and 64GB models without 3G were US$1000. When I tried to offer them US$900 they said that for that price they would buy it from me; I went to 10 different stores in the mall and they all told me the exact same thing... I don't know whether they were serious or just didn't want to negotiate but the place was packed with people paying these crazy prices for the device.

US $1000 for the 64 GB in HKG is not expensive at all. Check ebay, they are selling the 64 GB model for at least $900 (often over $1000) + shipping. Even in Canada where it's only 2 hour drive from the boarder, people are selling the 64 GB for $900+. One guy even asked for $1500 for a 64 GB with a couple of accessories on a kijiji ad. So for the fact this you can grab it from the store right away without having to wait for shipping, I thought $1000 in HKG is a pretty good deal. I would buy one there if money is not an issue, which is the case for a lot of people there.

Asked in a store I regularly buy from and got these prices-

$5280 for the 16GB
$6280 for the 32GB
$7280 for the 64GB

As you can see, for the price of a 16GB, you could almost buy a 64GB iPad in the US. And as for the 64GB's price... that's just ridiculous.

And I know people here so this is a best case scenario, at least until Apple officially releases the iPads here.
