I have a 2007 24" iMac and am thinking about upgrading to a 2016 15" rMBP (whenever those get released).

I'm thinking I'll want to have an external display with it. My question is, what's the best way to do this? Here are the options I've considered:

#1 - Install ScreenRecycler on my iMac and Jolly Fast VNC on my rMBP. (Link)
#2 - Sell iMac and use money to buy an actual display.
#3 - Install a different OS on my iMac and use an alternative to ScreenRecycler that runs on that OS.

Does anyone know of an OS/app that I can run on the iMac that will do what I want?

Is there something else I can do that I haven't considered?

Which of the options I'm considering seems best?

Sorry the 2007 is simply too old to use as an external display unless you use ScreenRecycler which at best will be disappointing. Get rid of it and buy an external display.
